SPECTRACAL also makes a color calibration tool called Calman. Calman RGB is designed for calibration of computer LCD screens for a number of different standards, including REC709, DCI, etc.

I’m pretty happy with AJA IO4K on a Macbookpro still on Mavericks and Avid MC 8.3.1.

Once you’ve transcoded the AMA’s, you no longer need them. So, it’s fine to move them elsewhere. The only caveat to that advice is that if you’re offline editing with the DNx115’s you’ll need to relink to the original AMA’s to do the final master.

How did you determine “proper” exposure when the shot was made?
It’s the nature of RAW capture to look, in the viewfinder, as if the scene is being overexposed, washed out. If you try to correct that “look” by reducing the exposure, you’ll end up with an underexposed shot that has tons of noise when you try to bring the exposure back up, in post.Determining proper exposure for RAW relies much more heavily on tools like a histogram or zebra; and, less on WYSIWYG.

I’m using an AJA IO4k and couldn’t be happier with the performance.I was using a Matrox box but gave up on it because it was finicky and didn’t keep up to date with Avid version releases. I, also, have a BMD HD box, never bought into the BMD 4K box because of the problems with it I’ve read about. Unfortunately. the IO4K won’t work with proprietary BMD Davinci resolve, which is the only reason i got the HD box from BMD.

What absolutely astonishes me is that after decades of ambiguity around levels, this kind of problem persists.

I would add that the levels need to be monitored more closely if the footage is changing luma. Somewhere in the import/export chain, 709/full levels are being incorrectly applied. If the colorist is using Resolve, he should double check what levels he’s exporting with. In Avid, you should check what levels Avid is applying on import. I’ve noticed that MC v8.3 will incorrectly change the levels of some footage when linking via AMA. I need to manually go into the Source Settings to reconfigure the LUT Avid is applying to this footage.
