  • Shane and Chris,

Thanks for the input. I guess it’s about time I gave this all a try. Shane– excellent caution regarding the re-capture dangers. I have a Drobo I use for backups so I’ll put a copy of the video files there after capture.

  • Shane,

Thanks for the quick reply. I do recall about the separate clips for start/stop, but a lot of my tapes are one per interview, so there are no stops.

If I won’t be exporting to HDV later should I just use the ProRes capture through FireWire method and then create my bins, make the subclips, add the Master Comments and proceed to edit as normal? Are there any caveats to using subclips?

I also saw one post that recommended turning off the “abort on dropped frames” option. I’ve always left this checked– your thoughts?

    Thanks,

    Bill

    Eric,

Thanks for the links. I had read the Apple post as well as other suggestions on various boards and after reviewing all of them, settled on the JES Deinterlacer (www.xs4all.nl/~jeschot/home.html). It is simple to use and gives me the proper frame rate before converting to ProRes.

I have next week off and plan on working full time with all of this so I’m trying to get everything in order before that.

    Thanks Shane,

I’ve looked at the IO for some time, but it’s beyond financial reach for this hobbyist. I do have the MXO, but will see what the MXO2 could provide me

    Shane,

Is there such a capture card for the MacBook Pro?

    Tom,

Thanks for the advice. If Leopard isn’t going to do anything for me in FCP, I’d rather go with what I know works and upgrade later. I never got my MXO to work, so I’ll spend the time working on that next.

    Thanks again,

Thanks for the concise explanation. After this, do you have to install all of your other apps from scratch and update or does Carbon Copy Cloner allow you to port them back? Also is there an easy way to see what all the little FCP effects packages that were purchased from third parties (i..e. Noise Industries, Natress, etc.) you have?

I remember something about saving them to a project so they won’t be trahes withthe new install, but don’t remember the process- any help for a solo, part-time enthusiast?

    Thanks,

  • Bob and Arnie,

Thanks for the replies. The bottom line is that I don’t enjoy editing in native HDV and the inability to get a card for a laptop to transcode has lead me to the ioHD.

Any thoughts on the more generic part of my quesion- do you think the ioHD, with the hardware ProRes codec, has or will change the thinking on the viability of a laptop v. desktop in closing the gap?

    Andy,

Thanks for the info on this card. I’m going to call them tomorrow and see if this will provide a solution to HD-SDI import.

    Chris,

What are you importing? I have a 17″ MacBook Pro with a terabyte of storage, a Cinema Display, a Matrox MXO for HD output and a new HDV camera BUT there is no current laptop hardware solution to import anything except native HDV which is a challenging editing format. Make sure you can bring in your footagr in the format you want before you go the laptop route.
