  • HDV to ProRes Question in Browser and Timeline

    Fellow Bovines,

I’m getting back to a project from about 8 months ago and as a hobbyist, I often have to go extended periods without having the time to immerse myself. I’ve been back reading the Cow a couple times a day for the last month, but I think the information overload is interfering with my need to just get back to editing work. In two weeks, I have set aside a week where I can devote about 80 hours to editing and I’d like to get all of the mundane tasks out of the way so I can concentrate on editing.

Currently, I have a rough draft edit (approx. 90 minutes) made up of clips in HDV and ProRes- I would like to be in ProRes for everything. I have several hundred clips in my Browser, about 90% HDV and the rest ProRes. 2/3 are from a Canon A1 shot in 24F and 1/3 are from the smaller HV20 at 24P (of course, that camera shoots 24P in a 60i “wrapper” and requires a reverse pulldown). Questions:

    1. In the Browser, how do I batch convert the A1 clips from HDV to ProRes?
    2. From a media management standpoint, can I add something to the name during the batch convert so I don’t have to look at the item properties to see the format?
    3. Can I then delete the HDV files?
    4. Can I use the same technique from Question 1 to batch convert the HV20 files to do the pulldown before converting those to ProRes? (I’m using a third-party app to do the pulldown.)
    5. What effect will all of this have on the clips in the current Timeline? (I want all of those to be ProRes as well.)

I’m sure I’ll have more questions, but this would be a great start.

    Thanks in advance,

    Bill Doyle

You can export the non ProRes files using QT or the Media Manager, Put them in their own folder… Then reconnect the HDV files to them. Finding or sorting on the compression column in the Browser will allow you to find the HDV originals.

    Hello There,
I am trying a similar thing, but at a lower level.
I know (I will guess that you know this as well) there are at least two ways to use ProRes422 with captured clips, Convert to ProRes422 using a Compressor based workflow, and Alan Tepper’s 16 step workflow using Cinema tools.

    Check these links:
    (semi lo-tech), but good info:
    https://eugenia.gnomefiles.org/2007/07/13/canon-hv20-24p-pulldown/

    https://allantépper.biz/sub5k/Stupid-Smart.html

    Apple’s site:
    https://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=306389

This helped me, at least from an information point of view. I still have to master the using one (or both) of these processes.

    Eric,

Thanks for the links. I had read the Apple post as well as other suggestions on various boards and after reviewing all of them, settled on the JES Deinterlacer (www.xs4all.nl/~jeschot/home.html). It is simple to use and gives me the proper frame rate before converting to ProRes.

I have next week off and plan on working full time with all of this so I’m trying to get everything in order before that.

    Hello Bill,

I am going to check out the JES de-interlacer as well, so thanks for the link!!!
I figured most everyone has seen the Apple workflow.
