  • Very cool! We dropped FCP and went with Avid and Smoke. Thanks for posting this.

Yep, that worked. I was trying to be a good boy and read all the documentation before I installed anything. Strange that this part of the documentation requires a “serial number” but the application does not.

Nevermind…the configuration pdf unpacks with the Lite installation. I wonder why the Lite downloads list the configuration pdf but then require a password? Guess it’s just the webmasters way of having fun.

    Except that…Thunderbolt is a PCIe 4 lane version 1.

Thanks Shane. I was there but don’t remember as much detail as you did…and I was not drinking. They talked about 28K (or was it 32k?).
Was that MC related or something else?

The big thing for me was the Kona 3 cards.

At a Avid event July 13 in Burbank…and after making a disclaimer saying there were no guarantees…
they placed a picture of a Kona 3 card on the screen and said they had received a LOT of requests to support that card. They are working on it…as well as other cards.

I am with a school and we have talked to Apple several times. They are not making it easy. As I write this, there is no educational pricing. We would have to pay retail for each copy and download it multiple times, once per computer. No thanks.

July 8, 2011 at 4:06 pm in reply to: avid 5.5 dongle?

I had forgotten about the dongle. We had lot’s of those in days gone by. FCP allowed me to install on my office computer and on my laptop. They figured I would be at one place or the other and they were right.
    Does Avid allow that?

    >you had to buy the AVID IO box

That’s part of what I am concerned about. We have 12 AJA Kona 3 cards that currently are not supported by Avid. I have no desire to buy proprietary video output gear from them. Been there, done that.

    >Is there a solution?

Yes, buy Avid. We now find ourselves teaching a dead product.
Does FCP 7 still work? Yes, but our students will graduate a year
or two from now. Will FCPX be “fixed” and ready for professional
use at that time? I have no idea. However, I do know that Avid is
ready now and it’s a safe bet it will be ready a year from now.

School budgets being what they are (use it or lose it) and with the
budget year clock ticking, we had to make a decision…NOW.

We bought 24 copies of Avid.
