Why does this make me laugh thinking of the slick music video I saw where the star rapper was singing into the END of a Neumann U87.
(for the music gear unfamiliar, the U87 is a very expensive German side-address mic. So singing into the end of it is the precise musical equivalent of “you’re holding it wrong.”)
Also, since the whole, “you’re holing it wrong” meme was born from the iPhone 4 antenna field tests – it I guess it makes people feel superior to riff on that – but if the way you hold something actually tests out to diminish it’s function (and for those who don’t recall, it was the crazy Apple fanboy crew at Consumer Reports who withheld their recommendation because of it (IIRC) and brought the whole stink to light — shouldn’t that be relevant? Most of us who owned iPhones at that time, just yawned, bought a case so we didn’t inadvertently short the tiny antenna gap on the frame – whether or not it was a “real” issue – and got back to life.
That the overall phone design delighted legions and it sold zillions was trivial, I guess, in the face of the superior thinking of the haters.
I can personally attest that there’s nothing quite so annoying as stumbling over actual facts along the path to one’s smugness.

Absolutely not.
I’m not as good an editor as many here. And I’m not even as familiar with X as many here – from whom I learn much in these discussions regularly.
The only thing I bring to the party is an almost pathological intolerance for one-sidedness.
I hate it because it stifles thinking. It narrows options. And it dumbs down discourse.
That is precisely what I saw happening here almost from day one. People so gleefully ready to trash something that they (at the time) had astonishingly little understanding about. (I actually had as little understanding myself, I just didn’t feel as threatened and felt that Apple’s long string of successes that have helped my business grow had earned them some time to show me why they did what they did – something I”m extremely happy that happened, because X has become a very useful tool in my editing toolkit – something that would not have happened if I’d listened to the half-dozen voices here that just couldn’t see it in any context beyond “the end of everything good in the world.”
The voices that question FCP-X and espouse rational reasons and keep open minds I respect. And can usually learn from them.
The ones who keep trashing it like it’s some lurking child molester and they’re babysitting a room full of cute kids – they deserve to be called out occasionally. And sorry, but drunk or not, Aindreas went there in public, so I’m comfortable with my criticism of his post.
I’d probably enjoy a pint with him if our paths ever cross. But for those who come hear to get some semblance of a balanced view of the programs capabilities (and weaknesses) I stand behind what I wrote.

As an alternative, a LUMA KEY will often be able to isolate a blown out sky while ignoring the land beneath it. That can allow you to simply “replace” the sky with a stock shot if you’re simply after a nice look and aren’t producing something where scenic truth or “reality” are important goals.

they have no emotional core. If they had a dog, it could be burnt in front of them and editing software is, relatively, a piece of toilet paper.
Apple are near flat out sociopaths at least. As an individual in operation, we are dealing with a sociopath. no empathy, no memory.

Folks, we clearly have a medical brain of rare sensitivity amongst us. I’m tempted to seek out a scriptwriter and a copy of Premier Pro (using FCP-X would be WAY too ironic) and storm Hollywood with a HOUSE clone!
(Oh, and not to put too fine a point on it, but if anyone reading here is actually struggling with any form of mental illness in the family, please be assured that AG is not cruel, but merely a bit clueless not to understand that tossing around mental illness terms like swear words at a Vegas fight can be kinda hurtful. Something I was reminded of once when I did precisely the same thing, carelessly describing a young persons behavior as “psychotic” only to be pulled aside by a very upset 14-year old schoolmate of my sons who was upset because his father had, in fact, just been diagnosed as precisely that — and it was tearing their family to shreds.)

A) If you think that writing is fighting, you’ve never done much fighting.
B) Far from exhausted, FCP-X has actually energized me. I’m enjoying editing more than ever before.Fact is, I just got a public link for the very first video I ever cut on X a couple of months back. The San Diego client who commissioned it was delighted. DSLR footage I shot in a day – edit and post took a couple of days in the hotel room and back in my studio where I cut my VO and finished assembly.
I believe X was the ideal tool for this.
This is “version 1” work from my thinking – and I watch it now knowing I could have done better titling and more sophisticated compositing and scene manipulation if I’d known *then* what I know now, (particularly since I’ve been studying up on Motion 5 for the past month and can now do more than just adapt the preset effects!) but for all that I’m pretty happy (and so it the client) with the results.
And much of that was due to the ability to work with my 5d and X on my laptop to capture, monitor, proof, correct, get client feedback and cut as the project evolved, rather than being stuck waiting to get back to my “facility” to move the project along.
Yes, yes, I KNOW that other software can enable the same kind of workflow. But we’re talking about the so often dismissed and maligned FCP-X. And that’s the point escaping many here. It’s, in many ways excellent software for modern video making. You’d just never know that from all the grief dumped on it here day after day.

Which merely means that if the wide world of editing best reflects the needs of LA promo editors that you hang with – it will have rough going.
If, on the other hand, the wider world of video editing better reflects needs that are NOT always aligned with the specific needs of LA promo editors – then it may well do just fine.
And if it continues to grow and develop (and it’s direct app sale model and the economic strength of Apple give it a superb chance of doing so) then people may change their tune over it’s initial years, just as they did with V1 starting back in 1999.)
Sooner or later we’ll know who had a clearer view of what it takes for an editing software package at the dawn of 2012 to do well in the marketplace.
It will be interesting, if nothing else.

No Walter, it does’t need anything remotely like a “free pass” – because it’s a competent general purpose editing program right now.
The areas of debate are in extended capabilities and suitability for top level pro tasks – some of which it does really well right now (short form web video, sports highlights, corporate training, etc) and some of which it does poorly or not at all (multi-cam, ProTools round tripping, integration with high end color timing, etc.)
The only question really left is this: will the arc of it’s inevitable development journey follow a “public highway” path where the features concentrate on the needs represented by the majority of the “drivers” in the population – or whether the capabilities that the specialists legitimately require – like the ability to win particular races consistently – will be elevated sooner rather than later to turn it into a better tool for those who need or just want a “race optimized” vehicle.
Nobody’s really arguing it get a “free pass” – which would mean it doesn’t function and therefore has no place in the editing world.
It does, – even if that place isn’t the one people expected it to fill prior to it’s release.

I’m not actually “championing” anything except to keep the discussion open and going. I probably come across most often as a cheerleader, but that’s only because I’ve seen so much mis-understanding and bashing for so long. And much of that hasn’t conformed to my personal experiences where I’ve delivered nearly a dozen FCP-X projects with few problems over the past 4 months. (not without occasional problems, mind you, but without missing a deadline – and nothing different from what I went through with Legacy at V1.

I just keep experiencing things in X that make me wonder “why this way” then later on, I run into something that makes me understand the “why” that escaped me before.
Probably chief among those was finally seeing the benefits of working in the “middle” layer of meta-data building as represented by the Event Browser, rather than leaving everything to the “final” layer of the timeline. Once I finally got that, a whole bunch of the new build made a lot more sense.

Is this stuttering performance before or after the background rendering is complete?
I find myself “expecting” everything to work in real-time because so much does via proxy – but then run up against something slow, open the render view, and notice that there’s a LOT of processing left to complete under the hood.

Sometimes.
I used to walk past a tangerine tree on my way to a summer recreation program.
Every day for a whole summer, I’d reach up on my walk and for a while enjoy all three at once.
So while that’s still a convenient shortcut to re-inforce what we need to push toward to sustain a business in certain circumstances, there are people who would argue that everything from computers to toasters have been evolving towards getting closer and closer to positive equilibrium in all three if you look at performance per dollar spent to obtain it.
