We kind of solved this problem. Two things:
One, the file name was very long and yet saved with “.indd” ext. later name was changed manualy (removed extension) not thru save as. It is easy to notice – when you open it actually showed the file name with the extension in the window top bar. Get info palete shows also file with the extension. That’s why it printed with the old file name. To remove the old file name you HAVE to Save As … with another name.

Another thing which kinda sucks: New file saved as “123.indd” , then another new file saved as “123”. Next step remove “.indd” extension from the first file. You have 2 files with the same name “123” in the same location. I thought it was the PC server thing, but not You can do it locally on the Mac’s Desktop. The file that we removed manually ext. will print as “123.indd”, get info will show also “123.indd”, and top window bar in opened document shows full name as well. I don’t like that system lets you do that. Sometimes you can loose the right file if someone changes on purpose or accidentally the file name. ALways people look at the files label not going to Get info or wherever else.

I tested all kinds of different apps and the same thing happens. Only Apple native apps would not let you do that.

Send a PDF with compatibility set up to Acrobat 6 (PDF 1.5). Everything what’s below Acrobat 6 has problems with transparencies and layers. I’ve been doing this for about the year and never had complains from any printer. Even my PDF/X1a 2001 I’ve changed to Acrobat 6. Let’s be honest Acrobat 4 is very old format (4-5years old). I would say 99% of printers will take format 6 and you don’t have to worry about transparencies, stiching and all that Acrobat 4 stuff.

Only Quark 4 docs can be opened (converted) with InDesign. Quark 5 and higher are written with totally different source code that is not supported by InDesign.

There is a very good app called Q2ID. Converts quark 3.3- 6.5 docs to indesign. And a good side is that you don’t need OS9 anymore. I haven’t tested it myself but I heard from people who use it, that it’s awesome. It does better conversion than InDesign itself. Always converted Quark doc needs some ‘cleaning” where Q2ID gives a lot better results.

it worked. I’ve copied over content of my custom workspace into the default one and I am all set, using Text Edit (simple as that – thanks)

Unfortunately I work with bunch of ‘muppets’ and explaining that custom workspaces you can load at any time, save for later modify etc, doesn’t work. Every time something happens (and happens very often, belive me I don’t know how they are doing it), reseting to default workspace, I have to change and explain to each one of them, Unfortunately I am responsible for smooth transition from Quark otherwise they wouldn’t even consider using InDesign. Their way is why “why learn something different, Quark is still good and everyone knows how to use it, blah, blah, blah” That’s why I wanted to create Default working set and have this problem off my shoulders.

I think I’ll create my custom workspace, open it later in Text Edit or whatever else and paste the content over to Default.xml.

No, you cant change layers. Only thing you can do is turn off layers visibility, cliping paths, and ICC profiles
