I had the same problem but found a solution!
Hope this works for you guys as well.

Here you can get the X-Mouse Driver: https://www.highrez.co.uk/downloads/XMouseButtonControl.htm

In the preferences you don’t have to change much, just set “Wheel Up”
to “Mouse Wheel Sroll Up”.

That should do it. Of course, the driver needs to be running all the time.
But hey, you can ZOOM in AE! Isn’t that incredible? 😉
