Sorry, the spacing did not translate in my folder file structure. Let me try again.

    Project X Folder
    – Premiere Project file.prproj
    – Footage folder
    —5d footage
    —Sony footage
    —–Card 1
    ——-BPAV
    —–Card 2
    ——-BPAV
    —–Card 3
    ——-BPAV

    Fraser,

I am somewhat glad to hear we are not the only ones with this issue, but a little disappointed no one has a really good solution.

Our current workflow is basically just folder organization. So a project folder might look like this:

    Project X Folder
    – Premiere Project file.prproj
    -Footage folder
    -5d footage
    – Sony footage
    -Card 1
    -BPAV
    -Card 2
    -BPAV
    -Card 3
    -BPAV

I hope that makes sense. We do not rename any of our footage, it just stays stored like this in the project folder. We then use media manager to import the footage into the project, which really just points to where it is stored. You can get more specific in your naming of the different card folders (i.e. name the folder 2013_3_13_WideCam instead of Card 1) if you like.

From what I have figured out, this is basically how Adobe wants you to do it. We are going to be moving to CatDV sometime soon, and I don’t think your folder structure and media management matter as much as CatDV does all of the catalog work for you, you stay organized via tags and markers and such.

I’d be happy to try to answer any other questions you may have, but this workflow is at least getting us by for now, and should until I start needing footage from project A in project R, but I’ll cross that path when I get there.

Ok, I like Prelude, at least to start, but I don’t think it will really satisfy our need. Here is an example from today. We shot a 1/5 hour presentation with 2 cameras. They span over 4 cards between the cameras. Now, to use them all with Premiere, in what I think is the suggested workflow, I have several folders, all containing separate BPAV folders, which contain clips that are all named numbers.

How do people manage to organize all of their media? I can see us getting very lost very quickly, imagine if we had multiple shoots in one day, and maybe accidentally imported into the wrong folder? Now I have a genuine mess, and taking this project to another computer (we have 4 edit bays) could be a nightmare!

If only Bridge would recognize BPAV folders as XDCAM like the other Adobe products do, I could see an end in sight. The thing I hear people say about the greatness of Prelude and Premiere is that you maintain the folder structure created by the camera. I don’t see that as an advantage, I would rather just have one simple folder with all my video clips in it.

Am I making an sense? I this something that CatDV would help with in organizing media? We record in the neighborhood of 500 hours of live footage annually, plus other special side projects, our media is going to be a mess in no time if we don’t figure out a decent workflow soon.

Thanks for all your help, if anything needs clarification, Id be happy to answer any questions.

    Kevin,

Would you mind linking to one of these best practice outlines? I can’t seem to find it, and we are considering implementing CatDV, but I am having a hard time figuring out how to get started with it. I have seen lots of forums and videos pointing out features, but few “tutorial” type instructions.

I’ll keep looking in the meantime! Thanks!

    Pat,

I know the JVC 250 is the same camera as the 200, but with genlock and full studio controls. I think they will be coming out with a 750, that is the same camera, but with all the studio controls.

I am also interested in this debate. We are looking to buy a camera soon, and recently demoed the JVC-200, since the 700 wasn’t in yet. But the rep did tell us all about it. I think it comes down to a few key points, and why I am leaning towards the 700.

    1. The 700 simply looks more professional, and it has a shoulder mount, which makes handheld look better and easier.

2.The 700 costs about $2000 more, but the Sony SxS cards are going for $800 for 16GB, while a SDHC card is about $25 for 16GB. Of course, there is a sacrifice. The SDHC take about 5 times as long to import, but if you use FCP, you can edit straight from the card. In the end, by the time you get the camera and enough cards to work, you are at about the same price.

So far, I am leaning to the 700, but I am really interested in getting my hands on it and trying it out. I would also like to hear everyone elses thoughts. Thanks for starting the discussion Pat.

March 26, 2009 at 6:07 pm in reply to: Creating a audio kit for video production

Thanks again Ty. Here is an updated wishlist, do I have things right?

    https://www.bhphotovideo.com/WishList/28E3385F79

For the Rode NTG-3, i went with a kit, I think a 9′ pole will serve our purposes, is wverything else in that kit ok?

I also am not sure why you recommend the AT4053a. What would I use it for? Is that a directional mic for the boompole?

Thanks for all your help. We appreciate it.
