  • Regarding speed: LTO-7 is way faster than LTO-5 and I’m really glad I upgraded. I get about 245MB/s average on LTO-7. LTO-5 was slow to begin with (~145MB/s peak) and often slowed to halt during reads/writes.

  • In my opinion trying to use BRU and LTFS could become an issue since the tapes are formatted differently (BRU has a proprietary format).

I used LTFS because it doesn’t require a particular software to use it (LTFS is an open standard) and we already have a decent media management/archiving solution for our company.

You might look into PreRoll Post if you need archive management and want to use LTFS

  • You’ll need a card with an external SAS connector. Most of these cards are Controller cards. I’m using an LSI 9212-4i4e RAID Controller Card.

Depending on the generation of LTO you want to use, you’ll need to ensure your SAS card meets the spec. For LTO-7 you’ll need a 6Gb/s SAS connection.

I learned most of what I needed from a Cow article a few years ago:

Feel free to respond here or PM me if you have any more questions.

  • Resolved.

Quantum has 2 different versions of LTFS Configuration software on their site: Model B and Model C. Model C software is required for LTO-7 drives; I was trying to use Model B (from the LTO-5 installation).

The Model C software works much differently than the Model B software but it works and it’s backward compatible with my LTO-5 tapes.

Unfortunately the Model B software can’t be installed at the same time as the Model C version so I can’t operate my LTO-5 drive without uninstalling/reinstalling software.

If your mixer has AES digital out, then yes- you just need the converter. The Behringer is necessary when using an analog audio workflow.

We have a Ninja but we don’t typically record direct from the camera (mostly used for program record from a switcher). It does work; you can take the HDMI out of the camera into the Ninja. You also have the option of using the Atomos Samurai and taking the NX5’s SDI output.

  • According to Bob’s post above, you need an Impedance Transformer to go XLR to BNC (not just a regular barrel adapter). RCA to BNC does not require an impedance transformer- just a straight adapter works fine.

Settings for the Behringer A/D converter:

    • Set the Left-side Source button to “Analog”
    • Verify audio input on the level indicators and adjust with the gain knob.
    • Set the Mode button to “A/D & D/A Conv”
    • Set the Format button to AES/EBU

In my experience heat/temperature does not affect the issue I’ve described.

I’ve cooled down the board for hours and restarted with the same problem from start-up before the components even get warm. I’ve never placed fans or cooling directly on the board to keep it colder than room temperature, but the multiview loss is occurring at room temperature.

Also the multiview loss has happened in every firmware/software version I’ve used with my 1 M/E. It was dropping multiview prior to and following the latest firmware update.

I’ve also been experiencing this with at least 1 of the 1 M/E switchers we use.

Everything is going along fine then suddenly the multiview just drops (signal cuts out completely, monitor is searching for signal). The signal disappears for 2-5 seconds in most cases and comes back just fine. Sometimes it happens as infrequently as once in 30 minutes, sometimes it happens as frequently as 2 minutes intervals or less. Sometimes it happens right from start-up, sometimes we’ve been in production for hours before it happens.

All I can say is it’s completely random. I’ve tried everything- rebooting, leaving the switcher off for hours, testing different cables/monitors/configs- nothing seems to cause it and nothing seems to fix it.

We operate 4 of the 1 M/E switchers in constantly changing configurations and I’m still trying to figure out if it’s all the hardware seeing this problem or just one unique switcher experiencing the issue.

Fortunately inputs and outputs are not affected when the multiview drops- everything else works fine and my records show no signs of change. It’s just a heart-attack for the director/TD and a few seconds of locking to 1 camera (since you can’t see your previews)- which is unfortunate in fast paced productions like sports but no big deal in a lot of stuff we do.
