Bad transfer deck. Old dirty tape. Either way, if the lines are consistent (as in not moving at all) you might be able to design a color correction mask around those lines that allows you to darken and grade only those lines slightly to match the rest of the image. This is not a great idea, and is always better in theory, but it might get you a bit closer to a balanced shot. Otherwise, I’d say use it as a style to show the antiquity of the footage and the fortune that it survived at all. Or just don’t use those shots – thankfully it’s not on all the footage.
Best,

Maybe it’s time for the preferences to be trashed… this system’s been running for… what? 10 hours. Nice!

Yes, I hope so too! I thought the idea was that Firmware updates could be loaded onto a blank SxS card and that the camera would recognize the update and install it?
[Ted Joyce] “We just had our EX1’s firmware updated by Sony.”
What did your update include? I was not aware of an update.

[Don Greening] “Even the RED ONE camera has rolling shutter.”
I thought they fixed this in RED, no?
Regardless, the lens data would be fantastic. The camera is already reading and displaying it on screen. It would be SUCH A benefit to have it in the metadata.

Can iPod games interface through the USB cable to make this possible?

I have 2 16GB and 2 8GB Cards, so I’ve ruled out the dual layer DVD option, although I think it’s a good one if you’re using 8GB only. You can use the the Clip Browser software to split shot cards into more manageable segments (if you wanted to store a 16GB card on 2 dual layer DVDs). I’ve decided to go Blu-Ray, however, so that I don’t have to deal with splitting cards.
Ultimately the best backup would probably be to a tape backup drive – these can hold TB of data, but they’re really expensive.

bah…. could it be corrupt prefs already? We just installed like a week ago!
Thanks for the input. Good to know the option’s not gone.

I don’t think you can do this in Final Cut (unless there are new features in FCP6). You could do it with applescript (or maybe with automator) and have it rename the files one at a time based on their creation date in the finder. Otherwise, I think you have to do it manually.

Yes, I’d agree that this approach is best. I wouldn’t say you CAN’T capture without the additional FW card – I’ve captured 720p over firewire on my Macbook Pro and it worked fine. But it’s true that you can run the risk of maxing out the bus capabilities if you are receiving video and writing over the same firewire controller, and I believe all the ports in the Macbook are on the same controller. This is especially an issue when pushing the bus capabilities towards the limits of its data transfer rates, as you do with HD, as well as when a consistent transfer rate is necessary (there wouldn’t be any problem if you were just copying data and it slowed down for half a second, but obviously this is unacceptable for video). Do as recommended: Get a second FW800 card, plug one device into the laptop’s ports, and the other into the additional card’s ports. It’s a good investment and will stabilize these types of tasks on your system.
