  • interesting -had not considered that one- thanks!

  • The monthly fee is honestly a huge turnoff for me, with Premier. I’ve played with it a couple of time in the past and thought it was ok. I’m just so used to FCP. I learned on Avid years ago – like 2000-2001. I’ve heard lots of negative things about FCPX – you’re actually the first person I’ve heard give it some praise. Now I’m curious.
My projects are just for myself, really. Varied in length and complexity. I use mostly basic toolsets – transitions, audio mixing, titles, filters, slow motion, etc. I like the “Motion” tab in my Viewer, so I can tweak the images and video on the timeline, down to the frame. Stuff like that.
What are the biggest drawbacks to FCPX? Can it handle 4K? Does it crash all the time like FCP7?
    Thanks!

  • Sorry I wasn’t clear – I don’t intend to use FCP7 on a new machine. I’m currently researching other options for video editing. I know Premier is popular, but also comes with a monthly cost – albeit that means all the upgrades comes with it. What is your vote – what’s the best software for the every day user?

  • That’s really interesting – I had no clue. Sadly, i have very little professional training on FCP – I’ve played with the software since FCP4 – just doing my own projects. Do other editing softwares have similar issues? Premier? Pinnacle? Vegas?
I’m currently exporting individual video clips from the timeline (in chunks varying 30 seconds to 5 mins – basically until I get the general error message), and then I’ll re-import, splice and dice back together, and then re-export as smooth video/audio timeline – all one sequence, obviosly.
    Thanks for the tips!

  • Many thanks for the reply and questions.

    To reply to you questions:
Running FCP7 on a Sierra OS machine is iffy at best.
    – TRUE. I AM PLANNING ON A NEW COMPUTER LATER THIS YEAR.

Is your sequence fully rendered before exporting? 39 hours to export is VERY LONG!
    -YES, FULLY RENDERED

If not rendered, delete your old render files before rendering again. Use Render Manager under the Tools tab for this.
(Be careful to only delete old render files)
    – YES, DELETED OLD FILES

Did you try saving your project and rebooting your computer to clear it out?
    – TRIED THAT TOO

Any very large stills? Are the stills the original files from your camera (can be very large!)
-YES SOME STOCK PHOTOS ARE VERY LARGE – DID NOT KNOW THAT COULD BE AN ISSUE (ESP. W/ 4K UNTIL RECENTLY!)

Any non-standard still formats like CMYK, Index, GIF, etc.?
-WOULD TAKE A WHILE TO CHECK, BUT I MAY HAVE TO

Everything converted to ProRes for editing? See below.
    -YES

Any compressed footage from consumer cameras or phones like H264 or mp4?
    -A FEW IPHONE VIDEOS YES

    All audio at 48K?
    -YES

No Mp3 files or 32k formats?
    -NOT SURE

    Tried trashing Preferences?
    – NO – ANY RISK TO THAT?

Repair Permissions? …Oops, you’re on Sierra, aren’t you? Never mind…
4Gb RAM is not much memory for your project. Amazing it even works…especially with a lot of stills.
Are you sure you have enough hard drive space left?
-EXPORTING TO 8TB HARD DRIVE – PLENTY OF SPACE

Your media is not on your system drive, right?
    – NO – SAVED TO EXTERNAL DRIVE

Might try breaking the sequence up into a series of smaller segments to isolate a possible corrupt file.
    – THAT’S WHAT I’M DOING – TEDIOUS. ABOUT 60% THROUGH WITH THIS, WITH ABOUT 80+ INDIVIDUAL VIDEO FILES – SHOULD BE OVER 100, AND THEN I’LL RE-IMPORT THEM, SPLICE AND DICE, THEN RE-EXPORT. I’VE ALREADY TESTED THIS WITH ABOUT 20 MINS OF THE WHOLE TIMELINE – NO ISSUES – I THINK FCP7 IS JUST OVERLOADED WITH THE COMPLEX AND VARIED MEDIA IN THE CURRENT TIMELINE!

October 2, 2011 at 9:48 pm in reply to: Still images blurry in canvas & export but not in viewer

Can someone please list the correct settings (User, System, and Audio/Video) so the “Canvas” image is not blurry, in comparison to the “Viewer?” I’m having the same problem as others with this issue and can’t seem to find a clear answer. My settings are currently: RT unlimited, Video Quality and Frame Rate are both dynamic. What am I missing? Is there a way to revert back to “initial settings” or something that will fix this issue?
    Thanks much!
