  • Still images blurry in canvas & export but not in viewer

This seems like a very common problem. but i can’t find any comprehensive responses. i’ve searched this and other forums but can’t seem to find a single clear answer

problem: still images (3504×2336) are crystal clear in the viewer. but when droped onto the time line they become blurry in the viewer. this problem is still the same when i export an uncompressed quicktime, or any other format.

my images are much bigger then the video footage, so i’m not sure why this isn’t working. the video footage i’m using is a little sizzle for internet distribution. i just want to change out some images. i can not get a hold of the original session. I just have the this video. The sequence, which matches the video footage, is 569 x320. i know this is tiny. its what i’m working with.

    anyone have an answer?

When you add the stills to the timeline, they take on the attributes of the timeline, including pixel dimensions and compression. So they are no longer 3504×2336, they are now 569 x320 and whatever the codec of the sequence is (which is a darn odd pixel dimension if you ask me…very non standard).

Shane’s Stock Answer #49 – Why is the quality different between what I see in the Viewer and what I see in the Canvas?

Well… the viewer is just that– a viewer. It will display anything that fcp will recognize as usable video or graphics. The canvas is a viewer too, but at the pixel dimension specified by the settings of your project and sequence.

For example, if your graphic or footage is much higher resolution than your 720×480 DV sequence, FCP is interpolating down your file to fit the settings of the sequence. Usually this makes it look not so hot. DV is a 5:1 compression working with a 4:1:1 color depth. Your pristine picture images and graphics are being crushed.

Same with picture files. HIgh res pics now adopt the sequence settings and will render to those specs, and most likely they are not as high quality.

Thanks for your quick response. There is nothing standard about this project. annoying in every way.

i should have clarified: I understand the footage will change the sequence to match the first footage put on it.

how do i then put photos on this tiny and completely non-standard
sequence without them getting crushed? or how do i use these photos and preserve as much of their quality as possible?

p.s. i resized the images in photoshop to match the sequence. but they still look terrible when brought onto the canvas.

Can someone please list the correct settings (User, System, and Audio/Video) so the “Canvas” image is not blurry, in comparison to the “Viewer?” I’m having the same problem as others with this issue and can’t seem to find a clear answer. My settings are currently: RT unlimited, Video Quality and Frame Rate are both dynamic. What am I missing? Is there a way to revert back to “initial settings” or something that will fix this issue?
    Thanks much!
