September 14, 2010 at 4:33 pm in reply to: “Continuous Keyframe” hotkey?

Thanks Andy — but I’m not looking for Continuous Bezier, which influences how the keyframes are interpolated spatially; rather I’m looking for Continuous Keyframe, which influences how keyframes are interpreted temporally. If you’ve ever worked in the graph editor (Shift F3) and you change the input velocity of a keyframe, you’ll notice that it won’t change the output velocity unless you do the dance [select keyframe; command+shift+k (this brings up the “Keyframe Velocity” window); check the “Continuous” checkbox]. At least that’s how things have been for me….

Spatially I prefer linear keyframes; but temporally I prefer continuous keyframes. I find it gives me the most control in the long run when doing lots of keyframing.

Incidentally, I just ran a test to see if Continuous Bezier keyframes also default to Continuous temporal keyframes, and it doesn’t look like they do. Maybe it isn’t possible, which would be too bad for a hotkey addict like myself….

In case anyone is doing a search, you *can* change the default custom size if in the prefs file (on a Mac, it’s in your user directory: ~/Library/Preferences/Adobe/After Effects/[… your version, etc] Adobe After Effects [X.X] Prefs). QUIT AE FIRST and make a backup copy of the prefs by option-dragging it to your desktop (making a copy there). Open the prefs file in a text editor (like textwrangler), do a search for “custom” and the second hit (at least in my case) has a spot where you can change the custom X and Y from 5 & 5 to, say, 32 & 32. Good deal.

Ah, shucks. But thanks for the link — the request has been submitted.

It’s probably not transparent — set the blend mode to Add and I think it will work.

August 8, 2008 at 4:31 pm in reply to: “Make Film Look Comp” project still out there?

    OOOOOUCH! Dave is without mercy!

I think I do have it archived with some project (I can’t remember which) from six or seven years ago (when my archiving methods were pretty awful) and — ahem, Dave — it was hardly a crucial project.

Someone else recently asked me about how to make an old film look with After Effects, and the Make Film Look Comp came to mind, and — knowing how long it would take me to find it amongst my own collection of dusty [and mostly unwanted!] DVDs and drives — I thought that perhaps someone had the file posted on an alternate website.

Alright, Dave. Go ahead and fire away again.

    Kyle,

My guess is that you are applying the noise in the same comp that you’re applying shatter.

Make sure the noise effect is PRECOMPED, or just do the following:

    1. Make a new composition
    2. Add a solid, apply the noise filter
    3. NEST that composition into your shatter comp

The problem (or fact, if you will) is that Shatter looks at the base layer of your reference layer — it doesn’t care that you applied noise. BUT if you did the noise in a previous [upstream] composition, it doesn’t know anything about what’s going on in the previous comp, just the [noisy] result.

    hopefully that helps

July 2, 2008 at 3:38 am in reply to: Make ‘Shrinking Empire Map’ in AE ??

There’s a tutorial (AE 5.5, but still works in later versions) on the sort of “nested map animation” dave is referring to here:

    https://library.creativecow.net/articles/unguren_ben/nesting.php

Should help to get you started

    Kyle,
If you’re looking for something like this movie clip:

    https://www.creativecow.net/articles/unguren_ben/shatter/images/tuts/shatter/X_41_noiseShatPrev.mov

…then you can read a tutorial I wrote years ago on Shatter. It goes into a fair amount of detail, and though it was written for 5.5 (I think) it should still work with newer versions of AE. The tut is here:

    https://library.creativecow.net/articles/unguren_ben/shatter.php

(the sand-shatter stuff doesn’t happen until page 4)

    cheers

I was getting the same error message with 4.5.5. I downloaded and installed 4.5.7 today and it solved the problem. (Quicktime v 7.4.1, MAC 10.5.2) Thank goodness!!

Have you tried opening the original file (from the HVX) in QT and exporting it to a lossless codec and working from there? I have had some problems with multiple machines reading HVX-originated 720p60 files the same way in AE, but when I exported them to the Animation codec first, all the problems went away. I work a lot with those cameras now, and always maintain a healthy suspicion of whatever is coming off those P2s.
