UPDATE:

It’s taken a few days to finally gain access to another system and camera to troubleshoot this one further and I wish I could provide a more technical explanation but here’s what happened:

– I demonstrated to them that with my camera connected to my laptop PPro said device was offline.

– I then plugged my Panasonic camera into their system and PPro controlled and captured it perfectly. (so my camera is ok)

– I plugged their Sony camera into my laptop and again, full control. (so my laptop is ok)

– I plugged my camera into my laptop and NOW EVERYTHING WORKS!

So somehow plugging in another camera seemed to ‘flush out'(?!) some configuration settings so that when I plugged mine back in, it detected it fresh. I wish my explanation sounded a little more technical and less like a problem with my plumbing, but that’s what happened. I wonder if anyone else has ever experienced that?

Anyway, I’m a happy boy again because my toys are working so I can go back to playing…

I’d be interested in people’s replies to this one as I considering doing the same. I did a performance test (www.passmark.com) and was astounded by the difference between my 4200rpm internal and my 7200rpm external d2 LaCie 500Meg firewire drive.

Back to my original issue, it seems that all Video Editing hardware solutions are on PCI cards, designed for a workstation not a laptop. Does anyone know of a PC Card or firewire-connected external video editing boxes?

Hi Tim,

Yep, I need to find another PPro system nearby (shoreditch, london) and take my camera along.. I’m currently organising with a friend to take my laptop to their camera and check if that works..

In the meantime, the bit that’s confusing me is that I can see the footage in Movie Maker but not in Premiere. I thought maybe there might be some XP Service Pack 2 or hotfix or driver or plug-in issue that made Premiere unable to stream in the footage being played on my camcorder.

I’ll update this thread as soon as i’ve tested another hardware combination.

Hi Aanarav,

I’ve tried Premiere 6.5, Premiere Pro 1.0 & I’ve recently purchased Premiere Pro 1.5 just in case it was a software issue. The behaviour was the same regardless of version and I’ve tried installing & uninstalling as well.

I’ve also tried the Microsoft post-SP2 patches to see if they may affect this.

I’m not sure why Movie Maker can see the stream and Premiere Pro can’t…?

Hi Aanarav,

I’ve just bought an HP Pavilion zd8290EA laptop which has a 1394 firewire port built-in. I’ve also got a LaCie Firewire 800 (which as a Firewire 400 port on it) but same results. I’ve tried different cables too. My DV Camcorder is a Panasonic NV-MX300A, which has worked well so far.

Software-wise i’m running Win XP with SP2 and I’ve got Premiere Pro 1.5.1 installed.

I can see the footage using Movie Maker but I can’t see the footage or control the camera using Premiere Pro.

Any ideas?
