It actually outputs fine to the HDCAM deck; its just the inaccurate drop in to the master that I am having trouble with.
FCP see’s the HDV to HD-SDI converter as a HDV device so there is no problem there. My only workaround was to edit out to HDCAM and then do a tape to tape edit to get it frame accurate. Double handling but it got the job done.
I have a blackmagic extreme but it is flat out and i was just trying to get the other work done on the SD/HDV system.Baz

Spencer – I hope this helps as we do it all the time here.
We ingest the HDCAM as DV from our Sony JH3 using the built in downconvert.
We then do an offline of the vision and a track layup of the sound. The sound is the same quality as if HDCAM (uncompressed).
When complete we send the sound off to our audio post as OMF and do an online in our HDCAM suite using the off line and master to our HDW1800.
Its that simple (if you have the machines).
In your case you should get a post house to transfer the HDCAM tapes to DV and then you can do the ingest with your own gear and then outsource any of the other stuff I mentioned.
If you were in Sydney Australia I could help you with it all but I am sure there are post houses all around the world that should be able to handle it.

Here is a suggestion (which I use)
Open your ep 1 and do a ‘save as’ and call it lets say “generics”.
Then in this “generics” project delete all the parts of the timeline that pertain to just ep 1 and create a generic timeline with your standard opener, stings, closers etc. Then remove all unused (I think under ‘project > remove unused’) and save the project. Remember your original ep 1 is still there and your “generics” has just the parts needed in all episodes.
Then it is just a matter of importing the “generics” into the other episodes and place accordingly.The copy paste works also as Vincent pointed out and even works between PPro 2 and CS3 but it has serious overheads on large projects when closing the ‘copy’ project and opening the ‘paste’ project as Adobe does a MAJOR caching job to the HDD. You can copy sequences from the bin AND copy selected portions from the timeline, then close premiere, open another project and paste – very spooky!

I have to agree pretty much with what Craig has said, especially when it comes to productivity as I also rely on my NLE toolset to make a living.
But I work with practical examples and I defy anyone to beat this…
I am currently working on a series shot HDV and to be mastered to HDCAM. I did one episode in Premiere; started it using CS3 and had to start again using PPro 2 due to major failings of CS3’s HDV capabilities. I also had major problems with PPro 2 but at least I was able to get the episode finished. It took 3 weeks to do due to the continual ‘compile errors’ and ‘.. running very low on memory’ amoungst many other deficiencies; and it is very powerful computer system.
So I decided to do the next episode on a Mac using my FCP. It is a meager G5 with dual 2g processors and 1g ram. No crashes, no memory errors; all up for the entire episode…. 4 DAYS! Yep, compare 15 days using Adobe and 4 days using an underpowered FCP; and I am new to FCP so I wasn’t anywhere as proficient with it as I am with Premiere.
As they say, the proof is in the pudding!
Now what to do with my $20K PC/Adobe HD piece of crap….

Just to add to that the normal requirement is the M&E to be ‘undipped’. But also be aware that many broadcasters also want digital 8 track split outs as well; also undipped.

Hey John – I edit to tape all the time with my Multibridge Extreme and HDW1800. The trick is to make sure the reference is selected to ‘input’ NOT REFERENCE; otherwise you will get exactly what you are getting.

I think we all agree that CRT is the best reference monitor (as long as it is a ‘grade 1’)
But for HD why fork out so much money for a HD CRT when most top of the line HD devices have built in down convert.
I use Blackmagic stuff and feed the HDMI to a Hi-Def 42″ plasma and feed the SD YUV to a Sony 20″ BVM monitor for colorgrading. It is a very cheap alternative and I also get a SD composite to feed the vector/waveform monitors.
When I output to tape I use a HDlink connected to the output of my HDCAM deck and feed the plasma screen.
