August 21, 2010 at 9:03 am in reply to: Would the new i7 15″ Macbook Pro run after effects easily??I am working on several Mac Pros – some with 32GB RAM, some with 16, some with 8. I also have a laptop – Mac Book Pro 15 2.53 GHz, 4GB of RAM (not the latest one) with AE CS4 installed on it. No external drives whatsoever.
The difference in performance is huge, but it doesn’t mean I don’t do some simple stuff on my laptop. I do. I’m using it on set, at home to do some tests, to record tutorials and so on.
I wouldn’t worry much and simply work on a laptop. When some day you have a chance to do something on more powerful machine – you’ll see the difference. You will also see the difference in price.
There is a simple question – how much is this difference in performance worth for YOU… for YOUR purposes. Check the price and see if this is the amount YOU would pay for better performance.Bartek Skorupa

It is not possible (as far as I know) to preview fields, but it is very easy to render so that you get interlaced animation. You set it up in “Render Settings” after you add your comp to render queue.
Simply select the option to render fields. Select the field order you want and you’re done.Bartek Skorupa

Sure:
Add a solid above the layer you want to mask. Add mask to this solid instead of adding it to the target layer. Set “Track Matte” of the target layer to Alpha Matte. Parent the solid to the null containing tracking data.

You could for example add the following to the expression generated by the pick-whip:
+value
This means that the original value of the flare position will be added to the pick-whipped value.
This way you can easily change the original value so that it matches your needs.Bartek Skorupa

July 23, 2010 at 8:17 pm in reply to: Lightweight Software for Combining Video / Audio FilesIf you have Final Cut – you also have Quick time player pro.
I simply open video in QT player, then open sound in QT player, hit Cmd-A, Cmd-C (copy audio track), Cmd-` to switch to my video file, opt-left arrow to go to beginning of the video and Cmd-Opt-V to add sound to movie.
Then I save the file as a self contained movie. QT doesn’t re-compress the video nor audio. It does only copying. It takes seconds. There is a very handy shortcut – Cmd-J. It shows you all the tracks you have in your movie. You can delete them, add new ones and so on.
In fact – QT player pro can do more than many users expect.

In After Effects we don’t have built in possibility to animate points of the mask. We animate the shape as a whole, meaning that we set a keyframe for the whole mask shape, then another keyframe, and the program interpolates the rest, so there is no simple way to achieve what you want, but check out this little plugin:

I’d do it this way:
First I’d save my project as let’s say: All.aep
Then I’d go to first bin, select the comps I want to have in a new project 1, then go to file -> Reduce Project.
Save project as let’s say: Bin01.aep
Open project All.aep
Go to second bin, select all comps I want to have in the second project, and File ->Reduce Project
Save project as let’s say: Bin02.aep
Open project All.aep ….
…..
and so on.Bartek Skorupa

I don’t know what app you want to use for screen capture, but most of them have the option to turn the cursor off. I used this technique several times when I wanted to reproduce some hand movements.
I am a Mac user and I capture screen via ISHOWU. It allows you to turn the cursor off.Bartek Skorupa

… or if you don’t like “dragging”:
Select the footage in the timeline, select the footage you want to replace it to in the project panel and:
Ctl+alt+/ (Win)
Cmd+opt+/ (Mac)Bartek Skorupa

No, because it is simply impossible, but as always in After Effects – there are ways around this:
Add a solid above the layer you want to mask.
Create the mask on that solid instead of on the layer itself.
Set the “Track Matte” of the layer to “Alpha Matte”
Apply the track to the solid with mask.Bartek Skorupa
