[Borjis] “I find it VERY Difficult to believe (I’m a certified pc tech btw) that
a mere 433mhz less of memory speed would slow this thing to a crawl like that.”Well… considering that your Xeon system has only 20% of the memory bandwidth of the P4 system, you’d better believe it.
This means that the data can’t be transferred to the CPU fast enough. Your Xeons are sitting idle most of the time, waiting for instructions.
For a fast AE system you really want a fast system bus, with very fast RAM. DDR2 preferably.

Yes… As cool as the transition to Intel may sound, this will once more take a lot of effort from the developers. The move to OSX forced them to recode their applications – and at that time they had to use Codewarrior, because XCode wasn’t available yet.
From what I’ve read here and there, when your application is developed in XCode, the transition to MacTel should be pretty easy. But all the applications that were ported to OSX in the beginning will need to be rewritten mostly…
And not only the big developers, but all of your plugins, too.
And now that Apple moved the switch to Intel CPU’s forward (it was originally going to be later), the pressure on the developers will be even higher.
Of course in the end, it should be a bit more efficient, because CPU optimisations can be shared across the different OS’s.
And I also wonder how long developers will be supporting PPC CPU’s after they switch to Intel for OSX. In other words: will you be able to run AE 7.5 on your current Quad G5? That would be a 3rd platform for Adobe to support and test…

Just realize that HDV is a very compressed image. So you’ll have issues with compression artefacts just as you do with DV.
The same goes for HDCAM and DVCProHD in a way, but to a lesser extent.
But my guess is that when you pull a key off of HDV and then scale down to SD, it would still look better than keying DV.

Sure, if you shoot HD, but edit and finish in SD, having HD source material would allow you to zoom into the footage while maintaining the sharpness.
AE will play along nicely, no problems at all. Similar to using large stills.

Actually, I think that’s what Au Naturel’s exposure plugin does:

On the short term though:
It remains to be seen how many of your favorite applications will be MacTel native in the next year or two.
The shift from Codewarrior (PowerPC) to XCode willtake a lot of resources from all the developers, basically needing to recode most of the application.
You will still be able to run your PPC applications on an Intel Mac, but it’ll make your brand new box feel like a G3 or worse…
And unfortunately it looks like running Windows on Apple hardware might not work for the time being:

[nicholastoth] ”
track hands and feet and link them to a mask and use trapcode stroke?”You can’t apply tracking data to individual vertices. You might be able to apply tracking data to the beginning point of a a Beam effect. (render > beam).

Take a look at Zaxwerks Invigorator.
There’s a specific forum on the COW.

Great stuff Steve, thanks for being an active member on this forum. It does add a very valuable dimension to this community to have developers like you on board 🙂
Oh… and it would be great to wrap this text into an article and put it in the COW database so we could easily refer to it.
