thanks for your messages – its not as easy as just updating fcp file as sometimes I add material – I have a number of different projects running at the same time – theres no way Id remember everything what Ive done – there must be an easier way but thanks for your comments.

as said before the fcp projects are 1TB files

no not done. My projects are 1tb + so takes a very long time longer than overnight sometimes and its stupid to have to copy from scratch when sometimes its only small changes that have been made. There must be a better more effecient way for larger fcp docs?
thanks tho

thanks for your message. Yes thats what I did with Time machine – just choose the project which needs updating. But it started saying that I hadnt backed up for more than 160 days or something and it couldnt back up – it turned out that it wanted to back up the whole project again – I spoke to apple and they explained why it was happening (far too complicated) – they suggested not using it or getting a bigger hard drive. Im already using 1.5 & 2 tb hard drives and cant afford a Raid system so am trying to find an alternative method.
your first option is what I was doing beforehand but when you edit its difficult to remember what youve been doing so it didnt work for me.
thanks for now

When I shoot I tend to use quite a lot of my material and dont waste tape. I dont scrub thru hour long tapes – it all depends how you shoot.
For cut aways yes I agree its a good function but I prefer seeing my interviews all in one batch rather than having it chopped up.
We all work in different ways – variety is the spice of life!
thanks

Could you let me know how to ‘Capture Now’ type of situation as you suggested? When I do apple 8 it only lets me capture in one way – is there another? Apple pro res is good.
thanks

July 22, 2011 at 3:42 pm in reply to: capturing entire hdv tapes withought making new clipsHi – thanks for your mail.
yes its breaking it up into individual shots (ie each time Ive pressed stop on the camera a new clip is created). I actually just want one continuous shot regardless how many times I’ve stopped the camera. It used to do this but when I updated something sometime ago (cant remember what) things started to change…any ideas how I can stop it doing this?
thanks

Hi David – wonder if you could help. Ive read the posts with interest…
I have 2 x 1.5tb hard drives – one with various film project (I use FCP) the other as its back up (with other bits n bobs). I cant find an effective way of backing up individual projects – eg just what needs adding rather than overwriting and starting from scratch. As we speak I am trying out Time machine which seems to be taking far too long – Ive excluded certain files which didnt need backing up and left it running over night and its still backing up. The project is 352 GB although on the back up har drive the project already exists but as an earlier version (324 GB).
Ive looked into the CCC as per your post but the website is going above my head…
1) is this the best way to go for backing up FCP projects?
2) Do I have to partition as it says? Im concerned because I already have files backed up on that hard drive that I dont want loosing – I only want to back up things that Im working on and activate as and when (rather than all the time in the back ground like Time machine does with my ‘admin’ files)
3) is there a simple step by step guide you can suggest as there is far too much info to digest on the CCC site.many thanks and hope you can help
best
