Thanks David
I do use Adobe software (DW, PS & AE) frequently but on a different machine to my Avid – I keep my Avid PC solely for MC, Sorenson, Avid FX, Boris, by Sonic and SmartSound, and when I upgrade my machine I’ll probably put my ProTools LE on it too. I only have Windows background at present…although, I’m still using XP and switching to Vista or W7 can’t be that different from jumping to OSX?
However, I though it was interesting how in this recent Avid promotional video ‘Robin Buday – Story of a switcher’ (at https://www.avid.com/mediacomposer4/index.asp) the studio they’ve shot Robin in (which I’d say is obviously a video set and not his own studio), uses a MacPro. This could just be ’cause they look sexy and shiny but Avid are clearly suggesting ‘This is how the pro’s do it’.
Any pro editors out there wanna fight Apple’s corner? I guess I’m hoping someone will…

Right, thanks 2 U & Clint I think I’ve got it now…?
I should use ‘Sony ClipBrowser’ (version 2.5) of to ‘copy’ the clips from the EX1 to the Mac (the terminology threw me – if u’d said ‘import’ I probably would have understood), then I use ‘XDCAM Transfer’ (version 2.9) to rewrap the files to .mov for FCP.
OR I can just install the ‘Log & Transfer Utility’ plug-in (version 1.0) which will allow me 2 import and rewrap clips straight into FCP.
Does either workflow have an advantage?
Incidently, all 3 software packages can b found at https://www.sonybiz.net/ex

Hi Craig – and thanks for your response!
“Why are you exporting MXF for Final Cut Pro?” …because the ClipBrowser software I am using (v2.0.0.0) will only convert the MP4s to MXF, and because I believe the format was specifically developed to include all of the meta data captured on the shoot (time/date, etc) or added to the clips in the EX whilst reviewing them in camera before exporting/converting onto the Mac.
I guess I was hoping somebody would reply, “No FCP won’t import MXFs” or “Yes FCP will but you have to do x”…?
“ClipBrowser 2.5 to copy” …I don’t understand what you mean here. If you mean the ClipBrowser software is on v2.5 then I’ll keep searching the web for it – I could only find v2.5 for ‘PC‘, hence my first question in my post relating to which version is current.
“XDCAM Transfer 2.9 to rewrap as MOV” …are you saying there is an even newer version of ClipBrowser (version 2.9) that converts the MP4s to MOVs on import? Or is ‘XDCAM Transfer 2.9’ something else completely? And either way, do the MOVs retain all of the the meta data?
“You might consider visiting the Sony site for all this including FCP workflow PDF” …Yes, I had already read that PDF and I understood it to say that my friend would need Flip4Mac so that he can import MXFs straight into FCP; however, I thought there was a chance this document was out of date. If my understanding of this PDF is correct, and he needs to buy Flip4Mac which will allow him to import MXFs straight into FCP, will this be better than using the XDCAM Transfer 2.9 you mentioned?
Cheers

Thanks for all your help you guy’s!
In actual fact I wanted to do both (speed a whole clip and speed the beginning of a clip).
I am using Avid MC3 & After Effects – I’m not quite there yet but used FluidMotion to adjust speed without noticable change in the individual frame quality. I had shot it with shutter speed 1/125 which I’m sure helped.

PS. (Sorry; now I understand) time base targeted: 25fps captured at 60fps

Hi Craig
& thanks for your speedy reply!!!
I’m making a 5 second Ident and will need to rotoscope (using Difference Matte) around a running guy in each frame; the reason I borrowed an ex1 and shot in S&Q Motion in the 1st place (instead of shooting with my Z5 and slowing in post).
The footage is great; lovely still frames! However, I’d really like the running to start normal speed and then slow down.
My understanding of what the ex1 does when it records slow mo is that it records 4 times as fast, therefore I hoped that if I remove/delete 3 of every 4 frames, I would end up with footage that played at normal speed, or is that just wishful thinking?
