Hey I just read another thing on LAFCPUG that could have an impact on the conversion:

    https://www.lafcpug.org/Tutorials/basic_export_files.html

“I just learned two other tidbits on using the Compressor 1 shipped with FCP: using “Motion Estimation (Best)” may cause vertical jitter in your MPEG-2 movies. This problem can be avoided using “Motion Estimate (Better)”.

As I’m stil on ver. 1 – Is the above statement true and should I keep to the ‘better’ setting instead of best?

    Thanks

    Anton

    Thanks David,

I’ll try the settings – another thing I just thought of: I’m burning and watching the dvd’s on rewritables: DVD-RW (as it’s the only dvd’s my drive can burn). Could this have an impact on the playback quality?

    Thanks

    Hi Rafael,

    I have found a workaround:

I changed my codec from DV PAL and 8 bit YUV render to 10 bit uncompressed & RGB render

This is the ONLY way that some of the banding artifacts go away and the Knoll light effect renders correctly (note this works on some sequences and not others but is better than nothing)

    But now the test sequence

    Hi guys,

OK i’ve tried changing my codec from DV PAL to 8 and 10-bit uncompressed and have tried rendering in all the available options (RGB, 8 bit YUV, high precision YUV, plus white and super white)

It doesn’t seem to work – the effect is still streaky – see a screenshot example of the error below: (on the left is the high res on the right after rendered)

    Thanks again!

    Thanks Rafael,

How do I force the rendering in 10b? (I’m sure you’ve seen, I need detailed menu instructions, bit of a FCP newbie)

    Thanks

    David,

My current sequence settings are “Render in 8-bit YUV” – as said I’ve found “Always render in RGB” to be better for the Knoll Light effects – isn’t it just better to change the curent sequence’s render settings to RGB and re-render?

unless there’s another place to change the settings to 8 0r 10-bit ? (oh yeah and the option: render 10-bit material in high-precision YUV is greyed out (so not available?)

    Thanks

Thanks David – quick one, how do I create a 8-bit or 10-bit timeline within the same FCP project?

    Thanks Rafael,

I’m working in DV PAL – footage is mainly inside a club / bar with some dark scenes and some very well lit scenes

Unfotunately the onlu monitoring I have on this one is the Computer screen and a TV to test 🙁

    Help appreciated

Thanks Walter, yeah it’s going to be difficult to cut from and to the 2nd camera because of the difference in sharpness etc. (and I don’t want to add grain to the good footage) – Any advice with that?

    Thanks
