I had no problems streaming it either. Using my company’s T1 with 250 other employees on a 4 core 2.66 MacPro.
Got a little blocky on the fades so it’s nowhere near Blu-ray quality, but exceptional for full screen web quality.

  • Jef,
I also noticed some color and gamma shifting when doing H.264 exports. I’ve found 2 solutions in Compressor to get the H.264 to more closely match the original file.

In Compressor, in the Inspector Filters tab, on the Video sub-tab set Gamma to 1.10 and in the Color sub-tab change the pulldown to Preserve Source.

I’ve found these 2 changes to make a big difference.

June 5, 2008 at 4:03 pm in reply to: ‘Recent Projects’ list

I don’t know if it’s directly related but I noticed if you don’t open the project with the File:Open it doesn’t show up n the list i.e. if you create a new project, work on it all day and quit – the next day it won’t be in the recent list since you never ‘opened’ it. Also, and this may be just me, I’m getting a LOT of crashes on quitting and it resets the list after a crash.

    Charlie,
First of all, what you’re doing sounds interesting. I wonder if you couldn’t show something of it?

Have you used the “Make Motion Favorite” commend to ‘save’ the position of the boxes? You basically set them all up once then click on the clip and then do Effects/Make Motion Favorite and you can store that scale/position/rotation/crop/etc. info. Next time you just apply the Motion Favorite to your new clip and it will pop into place.

April 16, 2008 at 3:57 pm in reply to: H264 and quicktime gamma question

To correct for the H.264 compression ‘error’ I use the Filters:Video:Gamma filter and set it to 1.2 to get the blacks back. But it still lacks saturation so I go to the Filters:Color tab and select Preserve Source. This keeps the saturation matching my pre-H.264 edit.

April 11, 2008 at 5:08 pm in reply to: Outputing ProRes422(HQ) Sequence to Tape

    Lisa,

I have the same setup as you and it’s really as simple as Walter described. File:Edit to Tape!
The codec, whether it be Uncompressed 8bit, 10bit or ProRes 422 is of no consequence to the BlackMagic card (with few exceptions). It does the math to translate from FCP to the deck. From your point of view it will be like any other layoff – no differences whatsoever.

As Walter mentioned, you can tell the BlackMagic card (in the system prefs) to down-convert on the fly to SD for that layoff. Both of my machines let you down-convert to letterbox or anamorphic ONLY. I can’t find a way to get the BlackMagic card to do a center cut 4×3 down-convert on the fly. For this I create a 4×3 sequence and nest the HD sequence and do a little zoomification to scale it 4×3. Be sure to watch your safe title! Final Cut doesn’t have a 4×3 safe title when editing in a 16×9 sequence (don’t they know that much of what we do in HD is center extracted for SD broadcast and the titles need to be 4×3 safe?…oh well, maybe in V7!)

March 26, 2008 at 10:40 pm in reply to: Zoom Into Playhead

I just use the default, Option +/- and it does not take up any undos. I did program the ‘H’ key to Zoom in 400% to mimic the Avid’s quick zoom in and Option H to zoom to 100%. Not exactly the same since Avid remembers the previous zoom level and snaps back to that, but still a very useful shortcut.

March 18, 2008 at 7:28 pm in reply to: FCP and HVX P2 card

I have been using it for almost 2 years with no problems. Not only that, but I prefer the workflow. Once you go P2, capturing from tape will seem so 20th century.

Also, Just came back from Kuwait where we shot with 3 HVX-200s with P2 cards and edited on MacBook Pros under horrible deadlines – not a single problem, not a single lost clip and made all our deadlines!

I would take Shane’s advice on backup – the files MUST be in 2 places before editing. If the drive crashes or you accidently delete a P2 clip, it’s gone for good.

  • Replying to my own post before anyone even answered – a first for me.

I guess I didn’t look far enough back in the Apple Support forums. I limited it to 90 days but the big thread on the topic is from July.

In case you’re curious – it is an error in Compressor since 3.0.1 in which internal compression markers (1 for each cut) added when exporting directly from FCP to compressors are misunderstood by compressor as real markers without the correct tags thereby generating an error.

    Anxiously waiting for 3.0.2…

    la mer,
I used the same setting and had no problem. Check the camera settings. The manual walks you through a few menu settings necessary before capturing to a computer.
