Put playhead where you want to cut, select the track the clip is in and hit Ctrl+K (add edit).
Ctrl+Shift+K to add edit to all tracks.

Don’t use match sequence and dont use Previews.
With match sequece settings you can end up with the wrong codec settings like just I-frames mpeg. This settings is only use full for DV.
Preview files are of low quality. They are for preview.
If you just want a quick output for say testing its a good option, but otherwise dont use them. Use a preset and Max Render Quality.

Make use of the Save a copy and save it to another drive (just in case).
Auto save overwrites after certain amount of project versions.

You should be able to import an project into a new project like it says in the Help doc.
Double click in the project window and import the project:
xxx.prproj.
Select whole project or just a sequence. Just try it.
Dont you have any back up projects or projects saved as …. on another drive?

CS5 should import Elements project files.
I would do the rough cuts with just the video and no transitions or effects.

Where the avi’s captured by Matrox? If so that will explain the red line. Matrox captures with upper field. As DV is lower field.
