It’s been a while since it’s like this. In SD, it didn’t quite make a difference, but in HD it’s quite obvious.

I always do my titles in AE now, except when it’s for a quick and dirty project.

Btw, be careful with squeeze with versions before 8 when exporting H.264. The Mainconcept encoder takes 709 levels, not RGB. If you give it RGB, your .mp4 will look too contrasty (because levels are expanded twice). This has changed in v8 and now it takes RGB for about everything.

I still don’t understand why after all these years Sorenson doesn’t interpret levels correctly and/or won’t let you choose to set it manualy.

To export an Quicktime AMA sequence (such as Canon DSLR clips), you can export an AAF without creating Quicktime Reference files.

To do this, you must enable “AAF Edit Protocol” and Export Method should be “Link to (Don’t export) Media”. In After Effects Auto duck import dialog, select “Connect After Effects directly to Avid media files”. AE will then link to your source files.

This only works with AMA files that AE can read. When dealing, for example, with MXF sources, you must select “Create QuickTime reference movies”.

I would add that using Avid DV50 is easier than the other Avid codecs since it is a 720×480 codec, just like MPEG2-DVD.

Others Avid SD codecs are 720×486, which can mess up the fields when converted, unless you add black lines on top and bottom to pad for the difference (which is a bit awkward to achieve in MPEGStreamclip).

My bad… didn’t know Premiere was that cheap!

Still, that’s only 200$ difference. But I digress, don’t want to be called an Avid fanboy…

Yes, but your credit card is US based.

With my Canadian credit card, for example, I can only use a Canadian iTunes/App Store account.

    Cheaper than Avid? not exactly:

I wonder how does Final Cut Pro 1.0 compares to Final Cut Pro X, feature-wise. We’re talking of a 12 years gap from one to another.

Btw, I’m having performance issues with the Calibrated XD plugin. Carefully test your workflow with their demo before buying it.
