very often Title 3D’s quirkiness has to do with fonts installed (or missing) in the system. It requires the standard microsoft fonts (Arial and the others) and some third party fonts may crash it.

  • you can even export directly to an omfi file, which is, as far as I remember, even faster.. It’s in the “Output Module” settings. Format > OMF.

April 16, 2006 at 7:40 am in reply to: HDV confusion, please help

[Michael Black] ” I have deck control, but when I try to capture, it goes to the spot, starts playing, but then doesn’t digitize and says, “Unable to lock deck servo. Tape possibly still threading.””

It takes a whole 5 seconds for the miranda box to give clean signal. You might want to increase preroll to 7 or even 8 (yikes) seconds in FCP. HDV really is a pain to online…

do you have third party quicktime codecs installed? (like blackmagic). Are you using third party plugins?

At last you could deinstall/reinstall AE. If this doesn’t solve the prob, I give my hat to someone else…

[Brian Charles] “Moved the same project to a G5 and no problems. Only the G5 Dual renders slower :(.”

A Quad G5 will render faster.
    (sorry, couldn’t resist)

Your problem sounds lika a codec issue.
Which codec are you using for ouput? Are you rendering with alpha? Which bit-depth?

Do you have third party devices plugged in your computer (USB, FW, PCI-X) ? If so, remove them. You may have a device with a old driver. If you have a SATA PCI (or PCI-X) card, I would verify on the company website if it’s compatible with 10.4.5 and download their latest driver.

The Apple Refurb store (US) seem to have at least one Quad. $2,799.00
And most cinema display are about 1000$ cheaper. What a deal…

  • are you rendering in 32-bit or 10bit? If so, that’s the problem. All alpha feathers seems to be buggy with FCP when rendering to more than 8 bit. This has been the case since a while now.

February 28, 2006 at 1:46 am in reply to: Do I need more RAM?

[Don Greening] “FCP 5 can utilize up to 4 Gbytes of RAM.”

The 32-bit limit is theoricaly 4 GB, but practicaly it’s 2 GB. Of course if you have other apps running having more than 2 GBs is a good thing.

The slowness of FCP is very relative, but I guess that if you are taking the time to wirte a post about it, it’s probably not normal. How is you array hooked up? Firewire ? SATA ? SCSI ? Which host adapter do you use (if not firewire). There have been posts about some SCSI host controllers causing problems…

  • [VanHagen] “How do you treat the resulting movie? Do you import it as RGB or as 601?
AVID e.g. allows you to import footage either with RGB or 601 luma settin”

That’s what i’m wondering too… if the editing software interprets the resulting file correctly (most do), then RGB 255 is set to YCrCb 235 and RGB 0 to YCrCb 16. The RGB colorspace can be seen as a subset of YCrCb.

But it’s still possible to get chroma unsafe value when going from RGB to YCrCb…
