My source was progressive pro-res so no trouble with fields – I just though the quality of BitVice MPEG2 from an HD source was really poor – but I’ll look at it again at some point.

This is an interesting thread as we all probably have to down convert to SD or smaller for the web.

So far I’ve had the best results by down converting in QT7, I’ve tried BitVice but only for MPEG2 and I was disappointed with the poor aliasing quality (maybe I need to do some more tests?). I found that the QT scaler was much smoother.

It’s not the content of the files that I’m having trouble with but the files themselves – they’ve somehow lost their ‘souls’ after burning to disc and are just not readable as bona fide mac files.

I actually don’t need these anymore as it turns out so I’m not too worried – I’ll try Greggs tips if I really find I really need to access them.

For a few years now I’ve pretty much kept everything ‘live’ on external HDs as the cost now makes this feasible (even with backups) and it’s much quicker to access archive material when a client comes along several years later and whats to make an edit change!

I’m also trying to open Media 100 files from the same backup. These are also now ‘unix executable files’ which I can’t open. I’ve tried changing the default app for opening with Get Info, and opening from within M100 but no luck.

Any ideas out there on how to turn them back into files that M100 and QT can recognise?

Well done for finding the problem. I’ve come to realise that computer based editing is always going to throw up issues – just the nature of the beast and one of the main reason that the Cow exists. However, the guys at Media 100 should look at each issue as it comes to their notice and try and sort it out. Here’s hoping…

This particular problem might have as much to do with QuickTime as Media 100. I would render any stills in AFX rather than putting them in the timeline.

Is there a black clip at the start of the program? I’ve had issues with black clips before causing weird things to happen to the export.

Those things are all fine, I can re-add the folders, but then I loose all the previous mark in out info. It seems XDCAM Transfer lacks a relink or reload footage function – such as AFX, FCP, Media 100 has. It’s annoying although not the end of the world. I think the software is a little half-baked in this respect.

Yes, nothing has changed in terms of the folder structures – just that they are on a new HD.
