Well, FCPX doesn’t trim media to cuts only like FCP7’s Media Manager. But if you don’t have massively long clips here’s what I’d do:
Injest H264 video with Optimize media off, and Proxy media on. Edit with Proxy media. When finished, duplicate project with the Used Media feature. This will copy entire clips, but only clips that are used in the project. Then Select all the clips in the new event and transcode to optimized for your online media.

I use a Lacie Rugged FW800 with my laptop. I would NOT recommend using a USB drive since throughput is variable and not steady. USB is not a very good choice for video editing. Also 7200rpm is a must.

Ok. There are somethings about your workflow you haven’t explained which alter what workflow you should be using.
Firstly, you get that message because whatever video/audio output you have set (ie: Firewire) can only output stereo audio.
Your original post said you were going to be “exporting” the project. If you’re exporting a QT file, then follow the instructions I gave you, but only AFTER you’ve finished editing. Those instructions are for export only. If you want to continue editing, your audio sequence settings should be set to stereo, not 8 mono channels because you’ll only ever hear what’s on tracks 1 and 2.
If by “export” you mean, “lay back to tape”, then you need a capture card capable of outputting several channels of audio. You won’t be able to layback 8 channels through the firewire to a DV camera no matter how it’s set up in FCP.

FCP reads the files exactly as they are on import. If you are importing a stereo piece of music, it will be a stereo clip. If you are digitizing from tape however, you can force FCP to capture audio as either stereo or mono tracks depending on your needs.

That is probably fixable by adjusting settings inside your camera. Most cameras can record mono tracks.
But if it’s already in FCP, all you really have to do is pan the master source clip to 0, and then only edit 1 track into your sequence.

Yeah, it’s sort of strange behavior and not what one might expect. There are two workarounds. The easiest is to lift the video clip from the primary storyline before creating the compound clip. This will ensure that the compound does not change it’s relative position in the timeline.
But, if you want to keep that video clip in the primary, you need the second option. Create the compound clip, then expand the video and audio and grab the video only, dragging it to the right until you’ve trimmed all the black.

meta-data like: reel, scene, take are searchable fields which can be used to create smart collections, so I’d say they are still pretty important. Plus they are also available in the list view columns of the event browser.

Yeah, what Simon said. Select the Project layer (above your rigs in the layers pane). Then select the Project tab and click the Publishing button. There you will see a list of your published rigs and parameters as they will be show in FCPX. Swap their position there by just grabbing and dragging where you want them.

When you click the upload image icon (looks like a badly rendered box camera) and upload your image, it will show up in the upper right corner of the box. You then still have to click on it to get the embed link HTML. Copy the embed HTML and paste it into your reply.
