  • You should watch my tutorial on Multicam workflow. It’s a two parter, but you can probably solve your problem with part one.

FCPX INs and OUTs: Multicam Pt. 1

You can use the auto sync feature to sync each of your takes as an angle and give your music an angle as well. Then you can play back the video and live cut between shots.

Maybe they’ll get rid of Avid Studio as well. It never made that much sense to me. Then it’ll just be Symphony/Pro Tools for the software, and hardware for the rest.

I’ve not had this happen to me, but what format and sample rate is the Tascam audio?

Not as a keyboard shortcut, but you can place your playhead at the correct spot, then grab the clip and with snapping on (N), snap the connected clip to the playhead’s position.

April 20, 2012 at 3:29 pm in reply to: Slipping Angles in Multicam – Is it possible?

To do what you’re talking about, you need the audio to be a connected clip in the timeline as opposed to being part of the multiclip. Technically, I’d leave the audio in the multiclip, but then add it again to the timeline.

From there, you can silence the audio track in the multiclip, and just edit picture. With the picture edited, you can select any clip and slip or slide it just as you would with any other clip. Hit T to activate the trim tool. Click a clip in the middle to activate slip, OPT+click to activate slide.

Exactly, I was so distracted by the trim he was trying to make that I barely paid attention to the tool.

  • [Lance Bachelder] “Turning tracks on and off just to hear some audio or having to build a transition in the slug above a cut just isn’t fun for me…

I don’t mind the transition part, since it was more flexible than FCP until Motion integration (and in X it’s even easier to build custom transitions).

But my biggest gripe with Avid was never the day to day cutting which it does very well. It’s their implementation of effects and keyframing. And how after 30 years of existence, you still can’t manually relink files or a dozen other small nitpicky things. I actually love cutting on it if all I’m doing is cutting.

April 5, 2012 at 6:22 pm in reply to: Opacity

At the very bottom of the video tab in the inspector, you should see an opacity slider. That is how you adjust it in the inspector. Note, this is only visible when viewing in a project or when viewing the clip in timeline mode. Opacity is not adjustable in the inspector if you’re just viewing the clip in the event browser.

Also, you can adjust the opacity of a clip in the project itself by selecting the clip, and hitting CTRL+V. This will open the video animation layers. Click the little icon on the right side of the opacity layer to open it up and from there you can lower opacity for the entire clip or fade the clip in and out with the fade handles, or even keyframe the opacity.

  • [Bernard Newnham] “I’m endlessly amazed at the loyalty shown to this product – FCPX that is.”

Some of us don’t feel like jilted lovers with regards to FCPX. We see it as a tool that either works for a particular project or it doesn’t. I’ve personally never put all my eggs in one basket as an editor, so it does me no harm to work with FCPX on the projects it works well with. And believe me when I tell you, for those projects, it works better than the other NLEs out there.

Most everyone recognizes it as an unfinished product. But I’m not a facilities manager required to make NLE purchases for an entire company. I’m just an editor who works with many different NLEs, and whose Mac Pro didn’t stop working when X was released last year.

This has nothing (or little) to do with loyalty for me. If I can’t use it, or it doesn’t make financial sense, I won’t buy it. Obviously you made a similar decision for your work. Why begrudge us ours?

[Simon Ubsdell] “Fixing performance issues just isn’t that sexy, as we all know.”

I doubt Apple will be let off the hook either way. If they focus on performance, people will claim that they’ve topped out on their features. If they add features, people will complain that they have no interest in improving performance.
