June 25, 2013 at 3:14 pm in reply to: path to fcpx share settings?

The settings are stored with the rest of the FCPX preferences in:

    user/Library/Preferences/UserDestinations.plist

But you shouldn’t need to bother with it unless FCPX is acting wonky in which case you should delete all the preferences including:

    user/Library/Preferences/com.apple.FinalCut.plist
    user/Library/Preferences/com.apple.FinalCut.plist.lockfile (if showing)
    user/Library/Preferences/com.apple.FinalCut.LSSharedFileList.plist
    user/Library/Preferences/com.apple.FinalCut.LSSharedFileList.plist.lockfile (if showing)

June 25, 2013 at 2:58 pm in reply to: FCPX acting up. Seriously.

[Florian Gintenreiter] “What can be wrong with a user that it causes FCPX to act up? Is there a list of files that FCPX stores/uses in the user?”

I don’t know that FCPX stores anything with the user, but there could be files that are being shared that are corrupt or have permissions errors.

I used DiskWarrior to rebuild the directory of my system disk one time when FCPX was acting up on me and it fixed the problems (which happened to be corrupt headers in QT codec files). I’d give that a shot.

June 25, 2013 at 2:52 pm in reply to: Roll edit/Trim tool performing incorrectly

[john skye] “1- How do I un-connect a clip so that I can roll it?”

You don’t have to unconnect the clips, but they do have to be in a storyline. One way to do this would be to select the clips and hit CMD+G to encase them in a secondary storyline. Then the trim tool will allow you to roll between the two clips.

[john skye] “2- What is the correct work flow in the following case”

In the example you give, here’s what I’d do:

Since the music doesn’t change, I would not edit it into the primary storyline. Instead, I would make it a connected clip (or secondary storyline) below the primary. Drop your video clips into the primary roughly and then use the trim tool to fine tune your edit with roll, slip and slide.

June 23, 2013 at 7:37 am in reply to: Why is Keyframing in FCPX so shite?

[Chris Jacek] “If the best argument for keyframing in Motion is to use behaviors, then isn’t that in and of itself an indictment of Motion’s keyframing process?”

No. It means that behaviors are incredibly easy to use and are a very powerful way to get great animated moves without having to keyframe. Or script It says nothing about keyframing.

[Chris Jacek] “Until you tell me that I can grab a whole stack of keyframes from different layers, representing different parameters, drag on them with a modifier key, and proportionally shrink or expanding their timing together, I won’t be impressed.”

Then prepare to be impressed because Motion can do that very easily. Nobody beats AE for keyframing, but you seem to be laboring under false prejudices if you think Motion can’t do things like that.

[Bret Williams] “FWIW Motion is pretty much crap at keyframing too. “

I couldn’t disagree more with you about keyframing in Motion. Motion is actually excellent at keyframing and very versatile. It’s only real issues are in dealing with selecting and moving keyframes under certain circumstances in the keyframe editor.

But in Motion, you can get great animation without even using keyframes by using behaviors instead. In fact, because I have issues with keyframing in FCPX, I’ve taken to creating stackable move behavior effects that I can apply in FCPX to give me much better animations quicker than I can trying to keyframe in FCPX alone.

That is until I saw Nikolas’s solution to ease curves in X by using the inspector. Good on you Nikolas.

June 22, 2013 at 3:26 pm in reply to: Send to Compressor, general consensus?

[David Eaks] “Do you ever open a different project in FCPX and work while the project sent to Compressor is still processing? or just walk away from the computer altogether once the batch is submitted?”

You can work on other stuff after submitting to compressor.

June 22, 2013 at 3:22 pm in reply to: Marker placed at top of timeline not on clips

[Paul Figgiani] “In FCP 7, how would you designate the difference between a Sequence marker and a Clip marker? If I remember correctly you need to either click the timeline Ruler or select a Sequence clip.”

In FCP 7, markers defaulted to the timeline ruler. The only way to place a clip marker was to physically select the clip first.

In FCPX, there doesn’t seem to be a consistent default state for markers. It changes depending on whether you’re playing through a clip or scrubbing through it, and even those states aren’t consistently one way or another. This necessitates the user having to select a clip before hand to ensure their markers end up in the right place (if that’s important to them).

[Paul Figgiani] “Point is I don’t see why making sure the Adjustment Layer is selected would be that big of a deal. Not saying it’s the most elegant solution. but it works.”

It isn’t a big deal. I was pointing out for the OP or anyone else who wanted to use this method what they had to make sure to do if they wanted the markers to consistently belong to the adjustment layer.

June 21, 2013 at 4:29 pm in reply to: Problem with a stuck clip

[Daniel Bernard] “t seems unlikely it’s a clip corruption since if I take the exact same ProRes 422 file and reimport it in FCPX as is (which mean same file with same name in same location in same event), the clip plays fine.”

Oh, when you said you “reimported” the clip, I thought that meant that you reimported from the original file, not the Pro Res conversion.

June 21, 2013 at 4:18 pm in reply to: Problem with a stuck clip

It sounds like there was some corruption in the optimization step. Since they play in quicktime, it’s possible whatever corruption exists is only noticeable by FCPX, some kind of metadata that it reads that QT doesn’t.

You could try running the clip through compressor (with the same codec settings) and see if that fixes the clip. Otherwise, it sounds like the damaged clips need to be reimported.

June 21, 2013 at 4:11 pm in reply to: Marker placed at top of timeline not on clips

[Paul Figgiani] “Now add Markers to the Adjustment Layer. Use Index to navigate.”

Have you noticed how imprecise adding markers in the timeline is if nothing is selected? If you’re using JKL to navigate, then it follows a predictable order: the marker is placed on the highest clip in the hierarchy at the point when the play button is pressed. But if you’re navigating with the skimmer, markers might show up anywhere unless the cursor itself is hovering over a particular clip.

I only point this out because your solution is a nice one, but the user needs to make sure they select the adjustment layer before adding markers.
