    Try doubling your shutter size when you render fields. This will make the amount of MB equivalent to the frame-rendered MB.

    All good advice above. It’s more about the software than the hardware.

    You want Premiere/Encore/Audition? PC.
    You Want Final Cut Pro/DVD Studio Pro/Motion/Shake? Mac.
    You want great integration between AE and your NLE? Dynamic Link on PC.

    What software do you own now? What platform is it?
    Do you share files with clients or other facilities? What editing platform do they use?

    When Intel Macs are released in hi-end desktop configurations, you’ll have the potential option of running Windows and Mac OS in the one box, meaning one machine really might do it all!

    300 dpi is the defacto standard for print artwork. Designing at lower resolutions can be problematic when printing colour seperated CMYK (patterning can be introduced by the screening of colours) but less of an issue for direct digital prints (like inkjet and dye sublimation printers).

    Just do the maths from there:

    4.75 x 300 dpi = 1425 pixels. So your 4.75 x 4.75 inch artwork should be 1425 x 1425 pixels.

    Sharpening your DV footage is unlikely to match the pristine look of your 3D material. Due to compression, and very often low-grade cameras etc, DV footage is full of chroma noise and digital artifacts that will just look worse when sharpened.

    I think you’re closer to the mark in your own post. Experiment with a very slight gaussian blur (0.5-1 pixel) and try adding a small amount of noise as well (to the 3D stuff, not the DV footage). If the 3D material is non-interlaced, but the DV material is interlaced, you need to deinterlace the DV stuff first. Use colour balance, levels and/or curves on the both footage elements (if necessary) to match colour balance and black and white levels.

    Once you’ve independently processed each layer until they’re as close as they can be, adding an overall grade (to both elements together) can be surprisingly succesful at blending two elements together. A LookSuite process, as mentioned by Justin above, or any form of grading, diffusion, noise/grain etc, added to the finished shot as a whole, will greatly assist in selling them as one shot.

    Nope, create a new comp of the correct duration, and use the D1/DV Widescreen preset in the Comp Settings dialog box. Then just drag the original 1024×576 comp from the project window into the new timeline. Render the new comp – easy!

    As mentioned above, you can just turn off field interpolation to stop AE deinterlacing the footage.

    But if you’re tracking interlaced footage, you’d be much better off dropping your correctly interpreted PAL footage into a comp that is set to 50 frames per second. That way you’ll be able to clearly track fields, and adjust the incorrect tracking points when they happen.

    Sorry, the end of my last post got a little skewed there. There was supposed to be your quote about things being squished, to which I answered “Turn on AE’s Pixel Aspect Ratio Preview to remove the squished look.”
