Time Machine can backup to any locally attached HFS+ volume (other than your boot volume) or to certain AFP shares over the LAN. It doesn’t care what the underlying hardware is.

Are you talking about Xsan? Xsan is now included in Lion, no additional cost per seat. You still have the infrastructure requirements though.

Try going to your “Purchased” section in the App Store, hold down the Option key and click the name of the app. Then hold Option again and click the Install button. This works for re-downloading the Lion Installer, not sure if it also applies to other purchases.

It wouldn’t crap out any sooner than it would from normal use unless you cram in more drives than it was designed to hold which could strain the power supply and shorten its life. The drives inside could always be put in new external cases if that were to happen.

AJA recommends separate boot drives or partitions for FCPX and legacy FCP. The drivers do not appear to be a universal release.
