    Gerry’s spot on.

    The old cards are PCI,
your new Mac Pro uses PCIe.
There were some external PCI enclosures that would get you round that issue, but I don’t know where you’d get them now.

The older “i” software went up to Media100i 8.2.3a, and last ran on OSX 10.4 Tiger.
You may be able to find the Media100i 8.2.3a software via torrent, as it used to be available freely for download on the Media100 website – acting as a demo unless you had the serial number. Otherwise, Borisfx may be able to provide it if you enquire.

Today’s Media100 Suite 2.1.5 software, will run on Intel Macs, with Snow Leopard 10.6.8 or higher.

Media100 Suite 1.1.3 will run on Leopard 10.5.8.

I recently upgraded from Leopard to Mavericks, and found 1.1.3 no longer worked. I have to upgrade to 2.1.5 at some stage then, although I’ll probably wait for the new Yosemite version due in a few months, and then upgrade to that, which should be good for both Mavericks and Yosemite, =).

Like Gerry says, you’ll need AJA, Matrox, or BlackMagic cards to input and output video.
Here’s Boris’ page on what they support – although I’m not sure it’s been updated since 2013…
    https://www.borisfx.com/media100/Hardware-Options.php

I don’t do any HD stuff atm, so I’m getting by fine just using Firewire for input/output for the time being.
Media 100 Suite supports DV and HDV over Firewire.
Any other forms of input or output, you’d need a solution from AJA, Matrox, et al…

Media 100 upgrade prices are on their shop:
    https://www.borisfx.com/store/cart.php?target=category&category_id=27
…although I’ve been quoted a much cheaper price when emailing them.
    Their contact details are here:

March 22, 2015 at 11:30 pm in reply to: Is this reason enough for M100 to make a comeback?

I always notice how much older than me other Media 100 users appear to be. If Media100 is to grow, it needs to reach new users.

I recall this response in an interview with Rob Newman (then Media100 Product Manager), back in 2006:

“The main objective when Boris FX acquired Media 100 was to continue servicing the long-time Media 100 customers that have been loyal to us for so many years.” [Source: https://velocite.blogomat.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=12&Itemid=2 ]

While users on these forums reading it, would have felt their custom was valued, it did worry me at the time, they were just going to service existing customers, rather than attempt to attract new customers.

Of course growing any business requires capital.
Perhaps Boris runs a tight ship!
Perhaps that’s why they’ve made the choices they have.

Nonetheless, there are so many opportunities for getting growth capital these days, if you’ve a solid business plan.

Totally agree with you that Media100 is simply the best NLE out there.

Film and Video creatives all have Macs, but I think videogamers are also a huge new market (they’re all making videos for Youtube and Twitch.tv) – and they are all on PC, out of necessity (the PC is the better games platform). I recently searched for a Media 100 tutorial on Youtube, and the first comment beneath it was “The bad thing is that it is Mac”. [ Source: youtube.com/watch?v=rcdG3ZBbNgY ].

Hearing about Alex giving away his iFinish system, reminded me that actually, there was a Media100i equivalent on PC too. I wonder how much work would be required to bring iFinish up to the level of the OSX version of Media 100 Suite? Then Media100 could be across both PC and Mac.

Not that I want to give BorisFX too much work where resources are limited. But since 2.15 can be hacked to run on Yosemite at present, we really ought to get a Yosemite version in the short term, and then hopefully they’ll figure out their long term plan for the software.

But yes – when you acquire a business, the intention is not to end up with the walking dead, but to grow the business, so as to gain from the investment you made in taking it on in the first place.

Gotta say, I loved all the improvements they made to the software, when they first took it over though.

March 22, 2015 at 11:59 am in reply to: To access to old Media 100 QT files

For the record, I’ve just found out the German website has the Media100 codecs for download, standalone, without having to install the Media100 demo.

    Codecs for Intel Macs:
    https://www.media100.de/fileadmin/media100/media/files/support/downloads/Media100-codecs-intel.zip

    Codecs for PowerPC Macs:
    https://www.media100.de/fileadmin/media100/media/files/support/downloads/Media100-codecs-powerpc.zip

I did actually go to their website https://www.media100.de first, but there wasn’t an instant download – just a form to fill out. Well, it seems after I filled the form, they did send an email back with the relevant links, =).

Glad to hear it got sorted, Jacques, =).

Martin’s your man, if you ever need codecs for the PC though – handy when working with PC based Premier users, and wanting to share your old Media100i stuff with ’em.

Good thing about modern Media100 though, is that you can edit in ProRes and other modern codecs, =).

Anyway, glad it all got sorted, =).

March 21, 2015 at 4:24 am in reply to: Is this reason enough for M100 to make a comeback?

Well, it’s a press release to promote their research…

…but it raises some important points:
    Volume versus Margin,
and Growth in Asia and Latin America.

I think another reason Media100 should make a comeback is because IT’S THE BEST, and MOST USER FRIENDLY, video editing software out there. Of course I’m biased – but it totally stands up to today’s offerings from Apple and Adobe, extremely well.

It WILL NOT make a comeback, as long as it’s not being sold.
It is not for sale on Apple’s App store.
It’s not for sale on Boris FX’s store.
There is no longer a UK reseller here in the UK, that I’m aware of.

Typing “BUY Media 100 Suite” into Google ( https://www.google.co.uk/search?q=Buy+Media+100+Suite ), gives you a page of results about Media 100. Only one of these – bhphotovideo.com is a shopping website, and at the top of the page it rather painfully reads: “DISCONTINUED. Ship Time not available” [ Source – https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/962877-REG/boris_fx_m100sws_media_100_suite.html ].

If the growth is coming from global markets – are there Media100 resellers out in Latin America and Asia?
Is BorisFX going to license the software to Asian and Latin American companies to market and sell over there? Or even develop further, and sell over there?

If domestic growth is coming from being price competitive, how is BorisFX going to achieve a higher volume of sales, to compensate for the drop in price?

To capitalise on everything your link mentions Marcus, Media 100 would need to be competitively priced, available internationally, available through popular sales channels, and embrace cloud video services.
The latter concerns all of BorisFX, not just Media100.
The cloud has the power to eradicate FX rendering times, =D.

    ==========

    UPDATE:

On a more positive note, I’ll say it’s always been a good time for a Media100 come back, =), and now is as good a time as any, =).

We can at least be sure a Yosemite version is in the works (fingers crossed our hopes haven’t been falsely raised, and they’re able to pull it off), and I hope that’ll be the first of a number of steps to better position Media100 to take advantage of all the various opportunities for its wider success, that are out there, =).

The easiest thing would be to go to https://www.borisfx.com/media100/ and download the 14-day trial of the latest software. It runs fine on Mavericks, and will install all codecs, etc, you need.

Only thing to watch out for, is if you open a project, programme, or bin file in the latest version of Media100 and save it (or if auto-save is switched on when you open it, and the system saves it for you), the newly saved files can’t be opened on older/earlier versions of Media100.

However, I assume you’re talking about Quicktime files in the Media100 codec, so you can just open them with Quicktime.

One tip – Quicktime X will not play back videos that use the old Media100i codec. Quicktime Player 7 will. You can download Quicktime Player 7 from Apple’s website here:

AGAIN: Have you tried exporting from Media 100 as a By Ref file, opening it in Quicktime Player 7 ( download here if you don’t have it: https://support.apple.com/kb/DL923 ) THEN within Quicktime Player 7, going to Export->Movie to Quicktime Movie->Options->Size->De-interlace Source.

Pretty sure the checkbox doesn’t work in Media100, but does work directly from Quicktime.
