You’re moving the goal posts, Bill. In your previous post, the one Chris and I commented on, you said that now that you have FCPX you can upload for client approval instead and no longer have to make DVD screeners and FedEx them out. The uploading method is not unique to FCPX, which was your implication from the previous post, but I agree that it can takes a few less mouse clicks in FCPX than it would in other NLEs.

And, like Michael said, basic tapeless archiving can be as simple as a mirrored pair of HDDs and a spreadsheet tracking what’s on each one. I’ve been doing this for personal & small side projects for years (as well as at the ‘zillion dollar’ company I used to work at). For my own things I recently got CatDV to replace my spreadsheet as I started to want more info at my fingertips than what is practical to put in the spreadsheet.

I’m all for giving FCPX credit where credit is due, but there’s no reason to go for an infomercial style, over the top hard sell.

Maybe I’m missing something, but I don’t see how uploading files for client approval or keeping files online so you don’t have to batch capture from tape are workflows exclusive to FCPX. One place I worked at was emailng MPEG1’s for approval in ’01 and at another they started media managing the FCP projects archival purpose. As you can imagine, it made revisiting old projects significantly easier (especially when many times the changes were just a new logo there and update the date here).

The search process is very limited because it is just an Excel document tracking which projects on are archived where, but once the DAM is rolled out everything will be keyword searchable and metadata can be entered by anyone in the office (Mac or PC) and by anyone that’s cleared to access it from offsite as well.

If you are smaller shop that might be overkill, but this place has over three dozen editors and producers that routinely access footage and currently the only way to do that is via one of the workstations directly connected to the Xsan so for people to be able to get what they need from their own desk will be huge.

I disagree to a degree. I think it has ‘Steve Jobs think’, not group think, written all over it. I think Steve had a vision of how editing should be and that’s the direction FCPX went in. I’ve read accounts from people that gave notes nearly a year before FCPX was launched and they were being ignored.

Years ago Randy Ubillios was working on a companion app, a logging type app, for FCP. He showed it to Jobs and Jobs said something like,”That’s what I want iMovie to look like” and that’s how iMovie ’08, which was universally hated, came to be. Two years later iMovie ’08 finally got back on track.

Maybe FCPX will follow the same course maybe not. Who knows.

I think that’s just one of those things where if something is wrong people speak up but if nothings wrong, or nothing major is wrong, they keep quiet.

It’s like if you are having car trouble you are probably going to talk about that it but on the flip side I doubt you talk about how your car is working fine when nothing is wrong with it.

That was a well thought out post Bill, but I think it was based on an inaccurate assumption of why I’m still on the sidelines.

For example, one of my needs is for video out to leave Beta and be as functional as it was in FCP classic. Another one of my needs is for FCPX to be used at places I work, or want to work, at. In LA I’ve seen more than one job posting that says “Need FCP editor (not FCPX)”. Again, I’m not staying away because it’s different I’m staying away because it hasn’t become practical for me to learn it yet.

There’s only so much time in the day and it makes more sense for me to shake off my Avid rust, get more comfy with AE, see how my Color skills translate to DaVinci, etc., than it does to spend time learning FCPX right now. FCPX could be God’s gift to editing but if I don’t think I can make a living cutting w/it I’m not going to give it any serious consideration regardless of what mind blowing features it might have. I’m an editor not an NLE evangelist, consultant or plugin maker so there’s no compelling reason for me to tolerate being a V1 bug hunter. 😉

I agree that we’ll probably see FCPX-like features appear in PPro and Avid just like we see features that were first in Avid or PPro in FCPX. If that’s the case though than it’s probably even less likely that I’ll ever pick up FCPX. I mean, if Avid meets my needs today and grows into meeting my needs tomorrow then I’m still looking for motivation to adopt FCPX.

How were the ProRes files created? Did you make them yourself? If you open one of files that is exhibiting problems in QT Pro 7 (not QT X) and look at the frame rate (command + i) what does it say (don’t play the file just open it)?

Hell, even in Real Steel (yes, I went there) the robots were still human controlled.

How many people have access to pencil and paper? How many people earn their living as a writer (be it novelist, screen writer, journalist, etc.,)? How many basketballs are sold to people that will never play pro ball? Stores selling musical instruments are all over the place but I really doubt there are any session musicians, let alone major artists, that worry about their jobs because a new Guitar Center opened up or because there are apps that can teach you to play guitar on your mobile device.

There’s a lot more to being a successful editor than just having access to an NLE.

Accessibility is great and the only ones that should be worried are people that only have a job because they had a monopoly on gear in their area.

I don’t use FCPX because it doesn’t meet my needs. There’s no fear or anger or denial entering the equation. I need something that does X, Y and Z and FCPX currently does not at this time so therefore I don’t use it. If that changes I’ll take another look at it.

I have read the Vimeo terms of service and they are nothing like the WeVideo terms Shane posted. Vimeo basically retains the right to stream your content via their site, their app and via embeds on other sites using Vimeo’s player or API (depending on your privacy settings and if you granted use via Creative Commons). Once you delete the video from your Vimeo account Vimeo loses these rights.

WeVideo, on the other hand, seemingly owns a copy of your work forever and can do anything they want with it.

Agreed. I was more commenting on the blanket statement that one should only use PR LT If one wants to destroy the footage, and not necessarily on Sascha’s specific situation.

BTW, the recomendation by Apple of using LT to transcode AVCHD is pure marketing shit.
