April 24, 2014 at 5:36 pm in reply to: FCP to PP CS6 – Adding audio to time line

Does anyone know how this is done? I keep butting my head against this issue.

When I am adding GVs to cover a sequence I do not always need/want audio from all the channels (4 tracks in P2). I know that in FCP I can toggle on and off the tracks I want to drag audio to, but I cannot figure it out in PP…?

    OK this is odd…

I did some research and there was a suggestion to go into the Apple preference and re-jig the monitor layout settings fro my dual screen and bingo, the external playback pop back on to the screen.

A fly in the ointment I think.

March 12, 2014 at 8:29 am in reply to: FCP7 with Mavericks

I wandered into an Apple store yesterday and my first Q to one of the apparent Geniuses on hand was “will Mavericks run FCP7”?

I am in the middle of transferring my edit work flow to Premiere Pro (which feels very familiar to any FCP7 users BTW) but needless to say I have an archive stuffed with FCP& project that I want to be sure will still be accessible through any future upgrades.

There are several options here – the first is to keep an old machine capable of opening FCP7 projects knocking about in my office just in case. This is not a preferred option! The second is to export EDLs or some such into a format that will allow PP to re-create the edits in their entirety, but I am not sure that this is possible or even what to do – although I rough-cut (and even final cut) my own films I am not a post workflow specialist. Help on this would be appreciated.

FCP7 remains a very important tool to me. As I have mentioned on other threads, all the content that I produce for BBC still requires a FCP7 workflow, so dumping FCP7 is not an option at the moment. But future proofing my archive is important.

    Thanks for any help.

February 27, 2014 at 5:02 pm in reply to: CS4 sorting P2 Metadata

I have also come across this issue in PP with .MOV files created by Final Cut in the FCP capture scratch. PP does not seem to see all the metadata for these converted files. The answer for me was to go my P2 archive and work from the source film in PP, all metadata seems to be readily accessible.

Still on the PP learning curve, but I feel it is worth persevering with…

OK. At the risk of answering my own question…(why do I always end up doing this??)…it seems that in PP you need to make sure that there is no ‘in’ and ‘out’ edit points marked on the time line and that no clips on the time line have been high-lighted either.

I also found out that setting the delay to 256mbps woks fine with mys set up.

have to say ot would be nice for this tool to function more as it does in FCP with the pips and a timed audio input point…but at least it is now working!

Thanks for any help there chums.

December 9, 2013 at 1:58 pm in reply to: Recording VO using the audio mixer

I am having simialr trouble with the voice over tool in PP CS6.

Running my V/O mic through my Scarlet 2i2 usb box. All the settings in PP seem to be fine, the audio input is metering on the track I want to record to, the track is armed and PP seems to recognise the preamp, but when I hit record, I get no audio at all, nothing records.

    Flummoxed. Can anyone help?

November 27, 2013 at 9:30 am in reply to: Anybody using USB 3.0 drives with Final Cut Pro?

OK, so I can answer my own Question here…”yes I am”.

We have recently installed a 6TB USB 3.0 drive in the Wild Dog edit studio as our Raid rushes archive and I am slowly stuffing it full of content. HOWEVER, the drive seems to make the Mac crash when it goes to sleep, something that does not happen with any other USB 3.0 or FW 800/thunderbolt device that I have connected.

Anyone know what the issue might be here?

November 27, 2013 at 9:23 am in reply to: BBC switch to Premiere?

Was down at the Beeb this week and the hot word from my source in the knob twiddling dept. was that two peeps from Adobe in California had been to see the engineers to discuss Prem Pro. FCPX has not even been considered.

From what I understand the engineers at Beeb are might concerned about the time that FCP7 takes to render HD programming, given then it is only 32 bit and does not make optimal use of all the cores on the Mac. “30 mins to render and 8 minute film…ridiculous”. The other reason that Beeb like the cut of PP’s jib is that cross platform thing…Mac’s will be dumped in favour of cheaper PC’s

Keep it under your hat though…

October 3, 2013 at 12:45 pm in reply to: FCP Archiving & Data storage

The other question I suppose is ‘is there any need to keep the P2 master files if all content is ingested into FCP as Pro Res”?

If both my scratch disk and rushes archive are backed up, then I effectively have 4 copies of the material…

I have always assumed that retaining master (ie original format files – in my case P2) was ‘best practice”.
