  • Thanks, Misha. That only works for effects, I think. I am using the entire layer’s properties, which is how “copy with property links” works.

BUT.. thanks to YOU I searched for “effect instance” at Aescripts.com and found THIS gem instead!

  • Same question here too.
Could anyone from the AE team chime in and let us know they are working on this feature? It’s a major pain to have to search and replace throughout expressions just because the “copy with property links” feature forces absolute values and does not allow the user to switch to relative values. Perhaps holding option/alt while selecting from the menu would use relative values – similar to alt-dragging with the pickwhip?!

    instead of:
    comp("compNameHere").layer("layerNameHere")

    please use:
    thisComp.layer("layerNameHere")

  • I think this link will solve all your problems!

I ran into a MAJOR problem with this disk cache file issue, to the extent that I would call it a bug.

I began my process in Adobe Premiere, editing almost 3TB of footage, and set up my SSD with the disk cache file directory, as specified by Adobe. Then, I continued my process in After Effects, where it automatically uses the same cache directory specified in Premiere.

The problem started happening in After Effects, when EVERY time I would save, the system would save properly, but then when I clicked the mouse to begin working again, the beachball (Mac OS X Mountain Lion) would spin for nearly 2 MINUTES (I timed it). This happened every single time I would save!

I tried EVERYTHING from disabling multi-processing, to re-allocating RAM and CPUs, etc. until FINALLY I decided to point the cache directory to a new, fresh directory on my SSD, and “deleting” the old cache when it asked me to. Ta-DA! Problem solved, everything runs perfectly now!!

Bottom line, when using a large amount of media, the cache file directory can balloon to a huge unmanageable size that causes After Effects to hang. Surprisingly, this hangup does not happen in Premiere.

WHY IS THIS VALUABLE BIT OF INFORMATION NOWHERE TO BE FOUND FROM ADOBE?!

  • How can I get this to work for 3D layers? I’ve found a post here on creative cow: https://forums.creativecow.net/thread/227/8511

But I couldn’t understand the Korean, even when using Babelfish, to get it working.
Then I found another post: https://forums.creativecow.net/thread/227/6984#12077

But the expressions were out of context, and it didn’t work when I tried.

I’m surprised After Effects doesn’t just have it in the default tools to draw a line between two points in 3D. That seems pretty basic.
I have 3D stroke as well, but not sure how to program that.

    Thanks!
