If you want to keep your video 16:9, I’d convert to MPEG2 (m2v) using the 16:9 NTSC CCIR 601/DV pixel aspect ratio. Audio should be converted to .ac3, which will save disc space.

October 16, 2009 at 8:07 pm in reply to: Hyperlinks in FLVs from AE?

In AE, make composition markers and then convert into Flash cue points.
Enter name, values, etc for your event cue point.

Cue points can also be made in Media Encoder.

Let your web staff add the appropriate actionscript that refers to your named cue points.

There’s good info on cue points on the Adobe Help site… both in the Media Encoder and After Effects section.

The above method is a good solution, but if you need to go the other route Todd mentioned by having the web staff superimpose clickable areas over the video, they can import the FLV that you compressed with your settings, and then mix in their content to publish a final SWF. The SWF adds additional functionality, but it still reads the video from your linked FLV file.
It doesn’t even have to be an FLV… you could make .mp4, .wmv, etc. and your web staff can import it via an instance of FLV Playback. In Flash, with component inspector parameters, they can link to any source video you provide.

You can get something like the Sonnet FW400 card to add 4 firewire ports to your machine. These only cost around $40 or less now. Then, you can enjoy the speed advantage.

So far, Verbatim and Sony discs for me are 200 out of 200 and counting.

May 22, 2009 at 6:55 pm in reply to: New camera

This camera looked like a great item for the price. I spent a lot of time with at at NAB. The pros are the range of audio/video formats it can do at almost half the price of some competitors. It does 1080 by running 720 through its digital signal processor technology. The SDHC cards are cheap to buy. I had the JVC reps shoot with it and ingest to the NLE… the .mov files looked good. If you want to pull files off the card to keep on your desktop so you can reuse the card, you need to keep the same exact file structure of the card, but that’s not surprising and only a minor pain. The image was good considering the 1/4 CCDs… however it wasn’t as good as the Sony z5u/z7u in my opinion. Nonetheless, this camera might make some people stop calling JVC Junk Video Corporation due to what you get for the price.

May 21, 2009 at 7:15 pm in reply to: CS4 Advanced Blu-ray playback doesn’t work

There will be a slight delay in doing what you tried as the laser needs a split second… but if the delay you experience is an unacceptable length, that would probably leave you with the 2 options already discussed. Scenarist is $$$. Although I agree that duplicating assets to do what you want is a silly option, the beauty of a Blu-Ray disc is it’s large capacity. If you are able to duplicate two or three times and fit what you need on a 25 or 50gb disc a few times, it’s a lot cheaper than buying one of the big boy programs.

May 21, 2009 at 5:06 pm in reply to: DVD to editable format again..?

There are many apps that will do this. mpeg streamclip is free and simple. you can choose a file format to export too… most main formats except .wmv i think. Of course, your footage will still be another generation worse than your already compressed DVD.

May 21, 2009 at 4:59 pm in reply to: Converting a DVD to Quicktime

Why are you having problems with MPEG Streamclip? But in the .vob files from the DVD, fix timecode breaks, and export to your choice of file. What are you exporting as? It takes a long time if you choose something like Uncompressed 8bit, but that really isn’t necessary due to the type of footage you’re importing.

Get Encore CS4 for your Mac (Production Prem) and you can burn Blu-Ray discs. The external LaCie LADVDBRFWU4 d2 Blu-ray Drive or similar model works like a dream on the Mac. I’ve used Sony and Verbatim media on it, including rewriteable Blu-Ray discs and the 50gb ones. No problems. Most clients have Sony Blu-ray players and they’ve all worked so far.

May 18, 2009 at 8:27 pm in reply to: is my computer good enough, or should I upgrade?

Oh, I just reread your post and saw that you wanted a PCI card, not a PCIe card, so disregard my post. When rereading your current system specs, it would be cost effective for you to eBay that system and get a whole new system. You can build one yourself that is at least 5X better for less than you originally paid for the one you are using now. Increasing your RAM means a lot more than just buying more sticks of it. You need a mobo that holds 4GB, but really you need 8GB and a 64 bit OS if you want a decent amount of power.
