  • LaCie USB External DVD burner work on a Mac?

I just bought a Lacie 22X DL external USB only DVD burner for $75. I opted for the USB model over the Firewire because it was cheaper and usually both of my FW ports are in use.

I just realized that only the USB burner is only listed as supporting Windows and Linux; the Firewire version of the burner is listed as supporting Mac. However, reviews on Amazon of this USB burner and other LaCie USB burners say that it actually does work on the Mac.

Can anyone confirm this? Does the Lightscribe also work? I’d like to find out before I open the box.

You can get something like the Sonnet FW400 card to add 4 firewire ports to your machine. These only cost around $40 or less now. Then, you can enjoy the speed advantage.

Thanks for the idea – but I have an iMac so I’m stuck with the ports I have. Plus, I’d rather use the USB drive and save the $20 or so.

I actually just the USB Lacie external burner and am trying it out. So far it reads and writes data just fine (it also play DVD movies just fine); I just need to test out the lightscribe functionality on the Mac.
