Re-import the still images in to the project, when you bring them in to the sequence they will run for the time specified in your preferences

Have you considered using Adobe Dynamic Link?

I’ve encountered problems writing audio keyframes to tracks since updating to cc2015, thought that the 9.1 update would fix it but no such luck…

Use Preview usually results in a poorer quality export, could you screen shot your export settings?
