I just checked the final firmware version 2.0 of the Hyperdeck and it appears that the Timcode now is regenerated from the last clip. That means that if you recorded a clip that was 0:01:50:00 long, the next clip would start at 0:01:50:01.
And here is a little bug:
If you start the recording after you played a clip, the TC starts again at 0:00:00:00 in the LCD window BUT isn’t the recorded timecode as it will be regenerated from the last clip. If you play this clip back after recording it shows the correct (regenerated) timecode.Still there is currently no way to edit or sync the timecode bewteen several Hyperdecks.

Please have in mind that it currently not possible to synchronize the timecode of several Hyperdeck devices. Actually right now there is not a single timecode setting that you can edit on those devices. Everytime you start a new recording the Timecode starts at 0:00:00:00.
That makes multicamera productions impossible right now with the Hyperdeck. It would be the perfect device for ISO camera recording but without timecode it is not usable for this purpose.
BMD says that Timecode options will follow in a later firmware release. Allthough no one knows when this will happen.

Yes it’s right that Avid can limit the usage of the codec how they like it, allthough the codec is free to use – even for encoding.
What I don’t like is the information policy of BMD regarding that issue. It would be fair if they would state on their hompage “DNxHD workflow is limitied to Avid Media Composer only. The MXF files will not work with any other NLE”.
But BMD doesn’t coment on that at all – just says that you can always use uncompressed for other NLEs – which you cannot due to recording capacity in some workflows. If BMD would be honest to say that their contract with Avid prohibits the support wrappers that support other NLEs then everything would be OK. That is only my guess btw.
But that is something BMD stays silent about.

Hi there,
what I’ve noticed is that if you record in different resolutions f.e. 720p50 and then 1080i50 on the same SSD you can only play the clips that have the resolution of first clip that you have recorded.
Hyperdeck Studio cannot see the other clips, as they are in a different resolution. Same applys for different compression types: If you record something uncompressed and then compressed you can only see the clips that correspond to the actual compression setting.
But for me the big showstopper is that it can’t record DNxHD in a simple Quicktime wrapper. Allthough we have a Avid license it is a totally showstopper that the files are only compatible with one NLE.

February 2, 2012 at 1:16 pm in reply to: Issues with Hyperdeck Shuttle 2 – Clipped chroma and lack of mxf viewerAh and btw.
There is a tool that can rewrap the MXFs: As mentioned in another thread it is from Calibrated and it is named MXF tools and it is 200$.
I tried it – it works perfect if you are willing to spend 200$Regards

Davinci Resolve light is an alternative – you ar right. Allthough it can only convert the MXFs to another format by rerendering and recompressing them. It is not able to rewrap the MXF files.

You are right. I heard that the Shuttle needs to be started manually. And you should remember that the only NLE that is compatible with the DNxHD files that the shuttle and the Studio produces is Avid Mediacomposer 5 or 6.
The Samurai produces Quicktime files that are compatible with all NLEs if you install the free Avid codec. A major advantage to the Samurai if you would ask me.
In conclusion the shuttle makes only sense if you are cutting with Avid Media Composer 5 or 6 – or if you are willing to pay another 200 bucks for the conversion utility from Calibrated software.

The last stable version doesn’t support the Hyperdeck MXF. If you send an email to the support of “Calibrated” they will send you a beta version that will work with the files.
They are extremly helpful and fast. Give it a try.
With the beta trial you will only be able to convert the first 30 seconds but you’ll get an impression about what this thing can do for you. It works really well.
I still haven’t bought a license because I still hope that there is another freeware solution or BMD comes up with a rewrapper utility or the option to record the DNxHD in a Quicktime container.

Bo,
there is the MXF Utility from “Calibrated” that works with the Hyperdeck MXF files. The only downside is: you have to pay 200$ to get it.
With that software you can create Quicktime Reference files that point to the MXF files. These file are fully compatible to all other NLEs. Or you can simply drag and drop the MXF file into Premiere Pro CS5.5 if you have the MXF utility installed.
