Yes! This was the fix that Adobe eventually came up with. They are supposedly working on a proper fix now its been logged as a bug.

Thanks – yes Acronis has come up in my searches. It’s around £50 compared to over £1000 for Archiware which seems almost too cheap…

    Any other suggestions?

    Hey Daniel,

I’ve just been trying to figure this out and came across the thread.

In order to make your matte, you need to make a solid white layer (V1) and a solid black layer (V2) on their own (separate to your footage). Then copy the animatte effect you had drawn on your footage onto this black layer and you will have a matching black and white matte.

Mixdown or export these two layers, then pop the resulting video above your footage and apply a matte key to it. You’ll then be able to move the the key around.

I’ve figured it out (with some help from aaquitug on Youtube).

Start in a SD project, link to AMA Files, transcode to 10:1 and group.

Finish offline cut & commit multicam edits. Switch to an HD project, select the Sequence AND the original AMA clips and re-link the sequence to those AMA clips (this is the part I was getting confused by), then transcode the sequence to DNxHD 185 this creating new master clips and new avid media.

    Does that sound right?

That sounds like it should work, but I’m unsure how to re-link back to the AMA files after finishing the edit (and committing the multicam edits).

Do I decompose the sequence and re-link the new clips? Do I re-link the original Master Clips (i.e. the ones I created with the first transcode)? I’ve never really had much success with re-linking in the past so perhaps I’ve been doing it wrong! I was under the impression that you can only re-link to media files not AMA files…

And am I right in thinking that however you manage the re-link/transcode to final master resolution, you have to bring in EVERYTHING at full res (i.e. all of camera 1 regardless of how many shots you’ve used in the edit) as opposed to how a tape conform only brings in the parts of clips that you need?

Thanks Michael. I’ve had no problem with using 2 banks of 9 before, but my ISOs in the past have always been supplied on tape, therefore I’ve been able to work at 10:1 in SD and conform the finished cut from tape to DNxHD 185.

The problem I have is that with tapeless source files there isn’t an effective way to work with low resolution media for the offline… unless I’m missing something!

April 7, 2011 at 10:12 am in reply to: XDCam: Digitise and Import?

Noah, we have no more time and because of the nature of the project we need to be editing in one suite while the online and grade happens in another, so low-res or hi-res we will still be “offline” editing and passing the cuts on to another suite for finishing. The cutting suites don’t support XDCam proxy imports.

Tom, I’ve not worked much with XDCam before. Is there a maximum clip length? We’re shooting long continuous multi-camera sequences so I wonder if each take (say 20 mins long) would be one continuous time-code accross one clip or several broken clips… Any ideas? This could have a knock on effect as to how long everything takes to group for multicam editing.

My ideal workflow would be to treat the XDCam discs like tape and do a traditional SDI conform, however due to the Sony stock shortage we may have to re-use stock before we can online hence the need to conform from the files instead of through the VTR.
