Thanks John. Yeah its a lesson learnt. But that guy who helped me out told me that he did not know anything about Sony Vegas or working on the windows systems. He asked me if my Vegas accepted .mov files. I checked with Vegas and i told him yes.
No one here gives attention to so much detail. While speaking to these guys i sometimes feel i know more than them about all this just reading on the internet. They just know FCP/avid and how to edit and they set up a studio. Hundreds of them. Most of them start as assistants. And there so much competetion. So its infact great that he accepted to do me this small favor. Normally they charge crazy. Its practically a is a fish market out here. No wonder we have the largest number of movies coming out. Most of them crap.
Anyway, so now my situation is that i have a video converter that is able to convert these unreadable .mov to readable .avi files. And i can open them in Vegas. Oh and, when i open them, im getting mono sound. Only L. But i thought i’ll sort that using goldwave/audacity.
1. Will i have any problems while working on these .avi’s? May be while rendering?
2. Lagarith codec – What do you mean lossless? Will be able to view the 7 frames that vegas skips that were compressed?
3. Does changing my .avi’s to .tga/.png and converting my sound to .wav be any good? Will that be a good option? i know it takes up a ot of space but im ok with that!
Thanks in advance. Cheers!

Thanks for that !
I ran the file and checked the codec. It says 16 bit integer (Little Endian).
Also i’m a little confused. By that first paragraph do you mean to say that, if a file was using AIC then it wouldnt play even if it was converted to .avi? [ I used Xilisoft Video converter ultimate–. plz review this too 🙂 ]
I’m sorry i really don’t know much about codecs and wrapping. Please be elaborate. This is turning out to be a good experience learning all new stuff. 🙂
Cheers!

🙂
I second the second point. Learnt by experience now. I cannot use a firewire or capture my own tapes because i rented the camera and he said he doesnt want to use a cable as it spoils the head. I cannot capture the tapes on my own as the decks are freaking costly.
Now i guess i have 2 options.
I tried converting the .mov files to .avi using some converters and they did open in Vegas. The problem is that it looks very tough to edit them. I’m trying for some intermediate codecs like Cineform to help me out. Also, i’m looking at converting the .mov/.avi to .png/.tga and edit as an image sequence.
Or i have to go get the tapes captured on windows system.
Any other suggestions are open. Thanks.
Cheers!

Sony vegas Pro 9.0c.
P.S: I installed the trial version of Cineform Neo HD. The trial crashes everytime i try to convert my .mov files. Plz throw some light on that too.

Thanks Mike.
Here’s the situation now. Someone was helpful enough to capture my tapes on FCP7 as .mov files and so i took an External HDD and brought them(.mov files) to my system VISTA. Now Vegas doesnt recognize the video. Neither does my quicktime player. I searched the internet a bit and found out that quicktime doesnt recognize HDV files unless i have FCP. And no codecs will help. So now i have 2 options.
1. Just convert the .mov files to .avi. Will that help? Will editing be easy?
2. Do i have to go back and get it captured in something other than FCP? Something windows based?
2. Someone was mentioning Cineform HD codecs. Can someone explain what this thing is about?
Cheers!

Hey Tim.
I am an amateur, student rather, short filmmaker. I just shot my short with a SONY Z7(HDV – 1080/50i 1440×1080) and i used tape.
I want to edit it myself and i have Sony Vegas pro 9.0c on my Vista 32 bit system with 2 GB RAM. But i dont have a capturing deck and a studio guy agreed to capture the short for me (m35 – system uses avid/fcp) and convert it into a sony vegas compatible file format.
So which do you think is the file format i should choose (.mov, .avi .mpeg) so that my quality doesn’t deteriorate drastically? Also someone suggested .tga files as SVP accepts .tga. Is that a good idea?
Thanks in advance!

Thanks for the replies guys.
But now, the person who rented me the camera has told me definitely that he cannot give the camera for firewire output as he feels it would spoil the camera. So all i can do now is use his capturing deck (Sony M35) to capture the video and then convert it to a format that would enable me to edit it myself at hoe.
Which format do you guys think will be the best for me on sony vegas without any degradation in quality?
