    Hey guys

Here’s the situation now. Someone was helpful enough to capture my tapes(HDV 1080/50i Shot with Sony Z7) on FCP7 as .mov files and i took an External HDD and brought them(.mov files) to my system Vista (32 bit/2GB RAM/ 2.8 GHz). Did this because i wanted to edit it myself on Sony Vegas 9.0c at home as i cant afford a prof editor.

Now Vegas doesn’t recognize the video (Audio? — Yes). Neither does my Quicktime player. I searched the internet a bit and found out that quicktime doesnt recognize HDV files unless i have FCP. And no codecs will help. So now i have 2 options.

    1. Just convert the .mov files to .avi. Will that help? Will editing be easy?

    2. Do i have to go back and get it captured in something other than FCP? Something windows based? Mind you to get my tapes captured again will cost me. So this wud be my last option.

    3. Someone was mentioning Cineform HD codecs. Can someone explain what this thing is about? Their sit doent offer much help.

Any other suggestions to help my editing become easier.

    Cheers!

    Thanks in Advance.

Just to clarify your question: are you working with Vegas Movie Studio 9b or with the 9c Pro version?

    Sony vegas Pro 9.0c.

P.S: I installed the trial version of Cineform Neo HD. The trial crashes everytime i try to convert my .mov files. Plz throw some light on that too.

It could be due to the codec used to compress the files in the first place. Apple likes apple. Therefore they made a codec called AIC (Apple Intermediate Codec), which you simply cannot do shit about, unless you own a Mac.

If the .mov files are compressed in the format, you need a mac to reconvert them into something useable (fx in iMovie).

That is the work around I did. Its painful and Apple sucks.

    I have two suggestions:

    (1) Capture your own tapes. All you need is a firewire card and cable.

    (2) Never ask someone with a Mac to do anything for you if you own a PC. Mac’s are incompatible with every other computer by design. 😉

Seriously, the files you have are useless on a PC. Why don’t you capture you own tapes with Vegas Pro if you plan to use Vegas Pro. That would be the best solution. Unlike FCP, Vegas can edit most HD formats natively and doesn’t need any of the silly conversions that FCP makes you do.

    🙂

I second the second point. Learnt by experience now. I cannot use a firewire or capture my own tapes because i rented the camera and he said he doesnt want to use a cable as it spoils the head. I cannot capture the tapes on my own as the decks are freaking costly.

    Now i guess i have 2 options.

I tried converting the .mov files to .avi using some converters and they did open in Vegas. The problem is that it looks very tough to edit them. I’m trying for some intermediate codecs like Cineform to help me out. Also, i’m looking at converting the .mov/.avi to .png/.tga and edit as an image sequence.

Or i have to go get the tapes captured on windows system.

Any other suggestions are open. Thanks.

    Cheers!

    “Any other suggestions are open.”

You have to know someone who has an HDV camcorder.
It doesn’t have to be a Z7, only capable of playing back HDV footage for you to capture into your computer.

OK, you are close. The fact that you could convert them at all on a PC implies that they might be using the Apple DVCPRO HD codec which is available for playback on a PC as opposed to the Apple Intermediate Codec (AIC) which is not. But Vegas should be able to open DVCPRO HD so this is puzzling. Open the file in the Quicktime player and go to the Inspector (Ctrl+I) and see what codec the file uses and let us know.

In the mean time… here’s something to try: Download the Lagarith codec and install it. Use whatever program you used to convert it to AVI but use the Lagarith codec for the AVI file. They should be very large but they will be lossless and editable in Vegas.

    Thanks for that !

I ran the file and checked the codec. It says 16 bit integer (Little Endian).

Also i’m a little confused. By that first paragraph do you mean to say that, if a file was using AIC then it wouldnt play even if it was converted to .avi? [ I used Xilisoft Video converter ultimate–. plz review this too 🙂 ]

I’m sorry i really don’t know much about codecs and wrapping. Please be elaborate. This is turning out to be a good experience learning all new stuff. 🙂

    Cheers!

That is correct. There is no AIC codec for PC so there is no way to even preview an AIC file outside of a Mac.

I’ll have to give it a look. 😉 I’ve been using AVidemux 2.5 and it’s been doing a pretty god job for free.

Oh yea! Every problem is a new learning experience for you and for us as forum moderators.
