November 12, 2009 at 2:27 amOuch! That format: HDV 1080i50 1264×711 (1888 x 1062) 16-bit Integer is a proprietary HD RAW format that only FCP can read. Did this person who captured the files have a clue that you weren’t an FCP user? They basically gave you something unreadable by anyone who is not an FCP user. If you paid him and he knew you did not own FCP I would ask him to please convert them to something readable on a PC or give you your money back.
Otherwise, if Xilisoft Video Converter Ultimate can read this format, (and I am shocked that it can but that’s actually great news) then just convert them to the Lagarith codec and consider it a lesson learned. In the future, if you pay someone to capture tapes, make sure they are giving you a format that is readable on a PC (and as I said… don’t ask a Mac user). 😉

November 12, 2009 at 6:09 amThanks John. Yeah its a lesson learnt. But that guy who helped me out told me that he did not know anything about Sony Vegas or working on the windows systems. He asked me if my Vegas accepted .mov files. I checked with Vegas and i told him yes.
No one here gives attention to so much detail. While speaking to these guys i sometimes feel i know more than them about all this just reading on the internet. They just know FCP/avid and how to edit and they set up a studio. Hundreds of them. Most of them start as assistants. And there so much competetion. So its infact great that he accepted to do me this small favor. Normally they charge crazy. Its practically a is a fish market out here. No wonder we have the largest number of movies coming out. Most of them crap.
Anyway, so now my situation is that i have a video converter that is able to convert these unreadable .mov to readable .avi files. And i can open them in Vegas. Oh and, when i open them, im getting mono sound. Only L. But i thought i’ll sort that using goldwave/audacity.
1. Will i have any problems while working on these .avi’s? May be while rendering?
2. Lagarith codec – What do you mean lossless? Will be able to view the 7 frames that vegas skips that were compressed?
3. Does changing my .avi’s to .tga/.png and converting my sound to .wav be any good? Will that be a good option? i know it takes up a ot of space but im ok with that!
Thanks in advance. Cheers!

November 12, 2009 at 11:16 amI’m glad you are learning a lot. You can tell the FCP guy that a .mov file is just a container. It’s a “bag” to hold video and not a video format. Quicktime mov files can contain any of hundreds of codecs and not all are available on both the Mac and PC (as you have seen).
> No one here gives attention to so much detail.
I mean this with no disrespect, but Mac users are usually people who don’t want to know the details of why something works and that’s OK that Apple shields them from all of this. (it’s good in some situations) It’s just bad when they need to help someone else out because they can’t think outside their little Mac world. It’s not fair to categorize all of them that way but they do have some pretty wild misconceptions about PC’s. (please don’t tell them that their Mac is really just an Intel PC underneath… lol ;-)) I actually like Mac OS X and plan to buy one at some point. I just also like to know what’s going on inside.
> Oh and, when i open them, im getting mono sound. Only L. But i thought i’ll sort that using goldwave/audacity.
No need to fix anything. The audio is mono because the microphone was mono. Just right-click the audio event and choose Channels | Left Only. This will make your event mono and it will correctly come out of both speakers equally.
> 1. Will i have any problems while working on these .avi’s? May be while rendering?
none. Lagarith is an excellent intermediate codec.
> 2. Lagarith codec – What do you mean lossless? Will be able to view the 7 frames that vegas skips that were compressed?
Lossless means that the compression that is used will accurately represent the video after 1000’s of re-renders because it keeps all of the video information. Most codecs throw information away when they render. They use the fact that our eyes are weak in certain areas (like we are more sensitive to light than color) so they keep the light information (luma) and throw away some of the color information (chroma) and we don’t notice it… that is until you re-render a few times and the picture starts to degrade. This will not happen with lagarith.
> 3. Does changing my .avi’s to .tga/.png and converting my sound to .wav be any good? Will that be a good option? i know it takes up a ot of space but im ok with that!
No need. Lagarith will have the same lossless quality as .tga/.png. The audio should already be uncompressed PCM WAV when you converted it to Lagarith.
You are all set to edit so get a cup of coffee or tea and get to work! 😀

November 12, 2009 at 5:00 pmThanks a million John.
Now…that cup of coffee may be just around the corner. i think ill learn somethings for a little while longer and start editing may be tomoro.
1. When i used Xilisoft converter to convert .mov to .avi it did not allow me to choose my video codec. So after converting i ran the .avi file through GSPOT and the codec is DIV3 (Divx 3 low motion). These are obviously not editable.
So how do i convert my .mov into Lagarith codec .avi (what software/converter). Or how do i convert the .avi using divx3 to .avi that uses lagarith codec?
Also, i downloaded the trial for cineform HD. I used it on one of the files and it got converted CFHD which i have heard is also pretty good for editing. Views
Thanks and cheers!

Yea, you definitely don’t want to use DivX. See if Avidemux 2.5 will render the files. I know that works with Lagarith because I’ve used it.

I didn’t recommend Cineform because you said that you tried it and it gave an error. If you can get Cineform Neo Scene ($99) to work… I would definitely use that. I use Neo Scene all the time. IMHO, it’s a required tool for anyone working in HD. That would have been my first recommendation.

November 12, 2009 at 11:51 pmYeah well, somehow it dint work with those .mov files. (damn you apple :p) When i tried converting the .avi (divx) to cfhd it worked like magic. But looks like its eating a lot of space. 🙂
I’ll start editing right away.
I’m gonna back again once i finish the editing for advice on exporting issues. 🙂
Thanks a million. You might just find your name on the credit roll.. 🙂

????
Your camera owner may be buying into the myth that using the camera as a deck wears out the heads.
I should wish for so much business here that my cameras would wear out the heads from overuse. It’s never happened to anyone I know and they shoot and ‘capture’ over Firewire ten to 20 hours of video every week.
As I said, since I get paid to shoot and edit, I can only wish for the day that my shop is so busy that this becomes an issue.

And, who told you that Vegas Pro 9 wasn’t a professional editor? A Mac user?

November 13, 2009 at 12:29 amSteve, I believe that what Anantha meant is that he/she couldn’t afford to pay someone who is a professional editor.
We all know Vegas is a professional tool and, in the right hands, it can do some amazing things. -

I meant an editor. The person sitting in a studio. 🙂
