Steve, i’ve got almost eight hours of juddered video which cost me an arm and a leg and then some! I can’t possibly reshoot! Isn’t there any sort of motion-blur plugin that i could use? Or would anyone suggest going cross platform onto after effects and lose a generation to try and add some effect there save from the judder?

An expert here told me that for specks and stains that don’t come off its safe to use very thin leather fabric, the kind that come with designer eyeglass lenses. He says that some liquids, even professional grade ones, tend to smear the grime rather than lift it off the camera lens, particularly the kind of grime that we get at the beaches here. Is there any truth to this statement? I did go out and get me a leather cloth yesterday. I tested it out by pressing my finger on a mirror surface and wiping the fingerprint off with the leather, it came clean off! I used the same technique with microfibre cloth and it only managed to smear the print!

Thanks Steve, I’ll try going to a camera repair center although I doubt we have any here, or that they know anything about anything. My best bet is a number of professional photographers that might have cleaning material that they’ve gotten from abroad. I’m also seriously considering making a protective cover for the camera for future beach shots, but not sure where or how I can get a clear lens cover to protect from grime and dust.

Thanks for your reply jon. I’ll try and find some lens cloth and tissue from a professional photographer i know. So even when i do get the cloth, what’s the best way to clean salt air mist out? I don’t want to damage anything.

All this is really fascinating – and at times thoroughly confusing! But I’m getting there! Also, would be great if I got some leads on finding more resources on blocking theory. Frankly, I don’t even know what it is!

Hmmm, I was thinking that if in one shot the couple are sitting with their bodies facing left (even though they are looking at each other), if I drew the line connecting the two subjects the next shot will have the couple sitting with their bodies facing right (even though they are looking at each other) – I thought that would be visually jarring for the viewer, but I’m still learning.

Lets suppose that I’ll never have to upgrade to HD from DVCAM, because that certainly seems the case in this country. It would be redundant to “think ahead” because all that’ll change is software and hardware and cameras and stuff like that. The networks here will always ask for a DVCAM at the end of the day. They don’t even want data files in any format, they simply want DVCAMS. They then capture these DVCAMS onto their systems to be streamed for broadcast!

Anyway, my predicament still stands. Keeping in mind the DVCAM master that I need to end up with, would it be wise to invest in an EX-1? If so, what would be the best workflow? Please don’t say that HD will eventually come into being here because it won’t, please don’t say that I should “think ahead” because I already am.

Which camera would best suit my purpose? I currently own a Sony FX1 with a BeachTek mic preamp which suits my purposes for the time being. I don’t have to downconvert or upconvert anything, i simply stay in the DV format. What benefits (if any) would I get investing in the EX-1? Or would it just be overkill for my mastering needs?

Noah, I doubt the powers that be are even interested in raising the bar, they don’t even really know the difference between DVCAM and HD, it’s all the same to them. So I’m thinking we’re going to be using the DV format for a while yet. So I shouldn’t think of getting the EX-1 should I?

Oh, i should add that my final master will always have to be in the 4:3 aspect ratio. Even if i maintain the widescreen look it’ll have to be letterboxed to fit 4:3
