Eliminating motion judder

If you are referring to while shooting, you will need a good fluid head tripod and even then it takes practice. You may want to utilize a rubber band around your handle to pull with as it will make for smoother movement even still.

If you are referring to post production, you may want to take a look at a free piece of software called deshaker. A guy by the name of John Meyer wrote a script that makes its usage 5,000% easier!

You will need virtualdub as well to make it work correctly.

I don’t believe there is any way to fix Motion Judder in post. This is caused by motion that is too fast for the frame rate so that our “persisted vision” is not fooled into seeing fluid motion. When you shoot 25p or 24p you need to be very slow and deliberate in your moves. It’s not like shooting 50i or 60i.

You could try converting to a higher frame rate so that Vegas creates in-between frames, applying motion blur and converting back but I’m not sure what you will get in the end.

Maybe someone else here has a trick up their sleeve.

I agree with John. Motion judder is almost impossible to perfect in
post. I know of no known solution to create fluid motion from
motion judder.
Personally, whenever iam working and comes across juddered content,
i discard it and come up with alternatives or go out and re-shoot.

Steve, i’ve got almost eight hours of juddered video which cost me an arm and a leg and then some! I can’t possibly reshoot! Isn’t there any sort of motion-blur plugin that i could use? Or would anyone suggest going cross platform onto after effects and lose a generation to try and add some effect there save from the judder?

Well Ali,
That then is a different story…you then have to work with what
you got. OK, here is the thing, if your footage cost you an arm and a leg, then its worth spending $145 to save it, The best tool i think may help is “DVFilm Maker” over at ‘dvfilm.com’.

This for me, is my holy grail to give video a film look. It does a lot more like smooth fluid motion, de-interlacing and frame rate conversions, all with absolutely flawless results.

SO, Try the demo first on a portion of the most juddered clip,
with several tweakings and settings…etc…
because this will tell you if it will produce the fluid motion you seek (the demo works just like the full version).
And then let me know the results, because i could give a few
more pointers.

What about Prodad’s Mercalli?

I saw a demo of it, and personally I know Allen Zagel could achieve good results with it.
Maybe it worth a try.

Yes,Mercalli is one of the best image stabilization tool around, i have it for sony vegas and it blows my mind how simple and effective this stabilization software is, but remember shaky images and motion judder are two completely different things.
