Short way = MagicBullet / Tinderbox plugin – both support this “look”.
Long way =
– Create manual overlays of a vignette and multiply onto footage
– keyframe and wiggle the brightness/contrast filter
– Use PS to create some grunge textures (scanning or manually drawing) and overlay them randomly and subtly onto the footage as the old film often stained
– Scan some hairs in and overlay them for 1 or 2 frames here an there, animate them traveling vertically across the screen or flickering (bend etc.) on the spot for a few frames.
– Animate the film sliding 0-40pixels left to right over 50 or so frames. This simulate gate weave
– Use the time remapping to slow down and speed up the footage slightly (for when film were hand cranked)You can go on with many more little details but that should get you started. A lot of work – hence the plugins 😉

Although coming from PAL-land I cannot relate 100% to your problem in NTSC, but I believe the specifics still apply. Once you start scaling and moving interlaced footage you start to run into interlacing problems as you mix-up the even-odd line referencing inherited in the original frame. So generally in cases where scaling and movement of interlaced footage is required, a de-interlace is needed first.I would suggest shooting progressive as you retain the full frame resolution, key off that, do all the scaling and motion and then do pull-down and interlace.

Additionally, also render a smaller length. For example, if you are rendering 30secs of video, just reselect 3 seconds and see if the black occurs then. I have once seen an effect that caused weirdness in render after rendering 50frames due to some memory leak error but never if it was only rendering 30 frames in a row. Weird stuff.
Also if you are rendering these two different length movies out, check if the black happens in the exact same spot or if it moves each time.
As Dave said, simple stuff, but it’s an exercise in dumbing the whole composition down until you find it. So start turning off effects, all the way down to temporarily replacing the footage layer (if you have one) with a still and see if it does it. It’s has to show up sooner or later.

Couple of things to try first.
1. Have you tried rendering in uncompressed AVI to see if the same happens?
2. Have you tried a different quicktime codec (Animation, PhotoJpeg) to see if it happens?Alex

I would use Quicktime with the PhotoJPEG codec at highest quality. No Alpha channel but by the sounds you don’t need it.

Hey there,
Unfortunately you are dealing with the worst of both worlds – fine, frizzy hair and DV compression. There is very little that can be done to get a nice key using DV. In best cases DV loses fine hairs, let alone when it’s super-curly. You’ll find that keylight and most other keyers will kill off the finer hairs and fill in the fine holes where you can see the background. This is simply because there just isn’t enough resolution on DV.
If you were shooting a close-up similar to your image and fill the frame as much as possible you will have the best chance. If you are thinking of keying a torso’n’head shot on DV resolution, things are going to get a little messy.
I have had to key out crazy locks of hair on several DV projects and it’s a nightmare to get nice smooth keys without loss of hair. Just keep him as far away from the green-screen as possible to avoid spill.

Hmmmm tough call. Depends a lot on the shot and the complexity of depth. Recreating parallax that doesn’t exist is going to be near impossible. At least not in a photo-real manner. With some simpler shots you could do some roto work and start separating the different depth planes and cloning in the holes, but boy, that’s going to be a pain if you haven’t shot clean plates with this in mind. If you have middle-ground in the shot it will make it harder. Head/shoulder in forground and stuff in the distance (no close ground) could lend itself to some roto work.
Keeping the shake to a minimum will reduce the risk of blowing the illusion, especially with some motion blur. You are correct, though, move the camera too far and the lack of parallax will kill it. Any way you could reshoot? Sometimes it’s easier than days of screwing around in post, AND you get it looking 100%. Probably not what you wanted to hear.Good luck, let us know if you stumble onto something that works for you.

Not sure I understand your problem entirely, but if I may assume that you have an object layer with something on it (say a picture of a beachball) and you want the text to go around it.
Create a text layer and apply CCSphere to it. Blow up the radius so it’s bigger than the ball. You can then rotate the sphere to move the text in a circular fashion. To make it appear infront and behind the ball, duplicate the text layer and then on each CCSphere you can make it render the outside and inside of the sphere. So the outside one sits above the beachball, the inside on behind. Now if you rotate the two CCspheres in unison, it looks like the text goes around the beachball.

Two things you can try.
1. The VOB files on your DVD are actually MPEG files, so unless the DVD was encrypted like commercial DVD’s you can copy the entire VOB file onto your hard drisk and rename it to .MPG and try and open it in Premiere. This doesn’t always work especially when there are crazy surround sound setups used or the contents spans several VOB files etc. It’s a rough solution but sometimes it works without problems.
2. Check out TmpGenc MPEG Editor by Pegasus. It can edit clips directly off DVDs and store them in an unaltered MPEG file so no recompression loss occurs. Costs money but it’s peanuts considering how useful this program is.
