[Nevin Styre] “-this is in Adobe’s notes for the feature but I will post it here too: once you have 1 composition in your AE project with editable premiere text, you cannot dynamically link/import any other sequence in that AE project that does not have premiere editable text, those comps just will not show up in the import dialog.”

this makes some sense. I’m guessing that they make template AE projects have a different file extension?

so you’d kind need to AE projects: 1 for general dynamic linking and 1 for templates?

also….check on performance with P2 mxf structures….when using facilis.

I never had an issue (we were mostly HDV)… but I was conversing on some threads here where ppl were complaining specifically and speed with that format.

I used Terrablock and PPro CS3 at a facility.(I actually spec’d it, installed it, supported it, and then took a job there as a senior editor)…

We had a pretty simple volume per project workflow with some volumes coming from common “Library” volumes.

We set up scratch disks in the project volume.

When the next editor opened the project everything was there.

For us a key (on windows) was setting up everything thru the C:->volume mapping…

in other words..volumes showing as C:/volumes/name of volume.
it’s also important to remind editors to import assets into a project via media browser or whatever) thru that path…

I think this is pretty standard with terrablock now…it was new when we were working.

just because windows (at that time) didn’t have an easy way to always map the same letters to vloumes when mounting. so that would break media links when opening a project on different systems…so projects required relinking…

sorry for the outdated info….but that’s what I can contribute….

  • Hi Dustin…

glad you are seeing some benefit…
I can’t answer the low level tech stuff on RAM or why the differential in time…

    For final out…

I had a couple of really good discussions about this here on the Cow…

    1) You can rebatch your proxies in AE at full res final quality. Then just export from PPro. For archive purposes though, you need to remember to manage AE project(s) and PPro. And this really means 2 sets of renders: 1 for FX and 1 for PPro.

    2) Walter Soyka pointed out to me that he prefers to really not use dynamic link at all and he makes sure to enable project linking in AE when he exports the clips he cuts back into the PPro timeline. This gives you a flat piece of media that u can use in PPro that can media managed by PPro for archive and certainly shouldn’t slow down export. And if you need to re-open the AE project it’s just a right click away. So that’s a good one too. But in my mind you’d still need to do collects for AE anyway for archive.

    hope that helps…

  • It’s not hard…

just select the comp in the project panel in AE.

    File > Create Proxy.

Once it’s rendered….it will be SET as the proxy for the comp. you will see a gray box (button) next to it in the comp panel. if the button is filled…then the comp is pointing at the render. it it’s not…then the comp is live again (meaning you can further refine the comp).

    That’s it.

Ppro dynamic link still has to look thru to AE, but if AE is seeing a proxy as opposed to all the live layers…it should update in PPro much quicker.

    hope that helps!

    May have that wrong.

I don’t think Prelude will allow you to destructively edit your source.

You can create partials from source though…
