Animation is not a friendly codec to a 5400 RPM drive for sure…so unless you need the Alpha…..it’s not really recommended for any kind of smooth playback in editorial.

that’s the only thing that sticks out in my mind…

    Hi…

either SATA or hybrid would be what I’d consider.

SATA will be the best Capacity value (store most stuff per $$) and should be adequate for most workflows (except for maybe super hires (beyond HD) native (meaning not converted to an edit friendly format).

Hybrid is a combo of low capacity flash and high capacity storage. As it uses ATA and Flash technology together. This comes at a premium in $$, but it may be a good choice for performance to get going.

Does the iMac in question support Thunderbolt? If so you can always add more external high capacity, high speed storage as your needs change.

    does that help?

    re: macbook air

internal media storage space….processing power….limited graphics hardware (which adobe apps really excel with)…

  • I’m no expert here at all…

but I seem to recall there was some memory mgmt and processor mgmt functions you can set up in prefs to determine load balancing. maybe someone can chime in as to what would be an ideal setup for you in your configuration.

I also seem to recall that once set….the idea is that AME would be the lowest on the totem pole if foreground editorial was taking place…meaning the encode would take longer because more resources would be pushed dynamically towards fg editorial.

It does seem to make sense that if the GPU is being allocated for RED preprocessing that it would make it unavailable or less available for other mercury tasks.

it also appears that the new cineform codec they have been talking about for transcoding workflows is really for ppl in your situation….to give you adequate resolution footage to work with that does perform in hardware challenged scenarios. Not ideal….as we all want to “start cutting now” but it is a way to deal with these things.

    Sorry for your headaches….

    just some things to ponder….

    cheers…

did you need to replicate the media?

you can always import one project into another and then just delete what you don’t need.

however in that case the media stays in place.

If you use the media browser panel and navigate to the location of the legacy PPro Project and choose it….can you see the bins?

  • One reason might be that the previous folder path no longer exists, so starting there looking for the missing file may not be possible.

Beyond that I don’t know the logic of why it starts where it does.

I think it stems from the last successful place it was ever able to validate a path to.

in cc14.1 you could also use the consolidate transcode function to generate new media sets from the sequence timeline….just specify a destination…that should work.

    1) Maybe it’s changed…..but it used to be that you couldn’t batch clips from PPro project panel….hadn’t tested it a while…so it works that’s great. still may not be be the audio answer. you could queue…but I think that was one offs…so when you had many to do, it was a PITA….

    2) I just delete whatever extraneous audio I don’t need in the ppro timeline before jumping to AE.
