taking a signal in via HDMI or HDSDI only bypasses the compression block if it’s live from the camera, and not the camera playing back a file. Once a file is recorded to file, it’s already been compressed.
Cineform makes a great intermediate codec that plays very well well with Premiere (as I’m sure Tim Kolb can attest to). They also allow for capturing to that format from signal so it’s a 1:1 time ratio to capture the material into the machine (as opposed to converting files which is CPU dependent).

Did you capture the footage in the 4:3 project or the widescreen project.
That might be what help PPro determine what pixel aspect ratio to use by default.I suppose that maybe that camera didn’t pass the wide screen flag in the DV stream when you captured. That might be a possibility.

If you’re on a PC choose, Microsoft AVI then set the type to DV.
Mac Choose Quicktime, then DV/DVCPro NTSC
That should do it.

MPEG2 is generally not a great editing format….
something frame based like DV would be a better choice….

I’m thinking that CS3 may not play very nicely with H264 source footage.
You either need a newer version of PPro, or you need to convert your footage into something that PPro will play nice with (likely DV) to make it work for you.

did you shoot footage in Wide screen mode in the camera, but choose a 4:3 aspect ratio project?
these are both 720 x 480, but with different pixel aspect ratios, make different frame shapes on the screen?
There’s some sort of mismatch there?
