[Bill Davis] “”My real suggestion. For six months, let the Premiere editors cross train the X guys in Premiere and let your best X editors cross train the Premiere guys in X.

Then buy a case of beer throw a party and let THEM decide.””

    This could be a plan!

    Hi All,

Again, very good incite. I am having a lot of fun hearing people’s thoughts and opinions! I maybe didn’t realise the can of worms I would crack open. ????

[Ben McCarthy] “”Why not let the editors use what they want to use, there’s ways of getting FPCX projects into Premiere and Visa Versa?””

Ben, In answer to your question we have a lot of projects that get revisited for amends months down the line that need doing immediately. With 80% on FCPX and 20% on Premiere when that project needs quick changes, undoubtedly the editor that was on Premiere is either on holiday or too busy on another project. This is why I feel we need cohesion across the board is necessary.

You may ask, for the projects that are signed off never to be revisited again, is some editors using Premiere fine? Yes, I suppose. Although it does make for messy Post-Production Workflows. E.g When using and backing up a NAS for centralised storage.

    Thanks everybody,

I think what I’ve been trying to conclude is if Premiere will substantially benefit our company by offering lots additional features and overall a better NLE, but to conclude and after doing a lot more research, dabbling a little with it myself I don’t feel that Premiere will substantially benefit our company. In fact the change will be far more disruptive.

If after my initial question, If I had gotten an overwhelming response from people saying ‘Premiere all the way’ then this would have definitely raised an eyebrow. Although it seems as like most things, there are Pros and Cons to both FCPX and Premiere with both NLE’s capable of delivering quality end products.

Thanks for all of your fast responses. Please keep them coming as they offer great incite:

I suppose hear are a few doubts from FCPX which we have struggled with and wonder if Premiere could solve?:

    1. Motion Templates: With different projects moving to different computers, or a project being revisited months later. We often have problems of missing plugins and struggle to keep our machines coherent. Could this issue be solved with premier?

    2. Transcoded media: With FCPX DATA is essentially doubled, I.e the PRORES files that are created within the optimised media folder to work best with FCPX are in addition to our original RUSHES on our NAS and are taking more space the necessary. I suppose this is a separate question but if we stop optimising media will we see FCPX start to run much slower? – Whereas Premiere on the other hand works with the native format.

    3. AE Integration: Is the integration with aftereffects really that good? As much as I’d love to find an awesome Motion editor, they seem to be virtually non-existent here in Ireland.

    4. Future of FCPX: I feel Apple have shown an enthusiasm of late for FCPX with major updates, the introduction of SMB and a far more professional overhaul feel to the NLE in 10.3. Although some of my colleagues feel a danger of being left high and dry like with the death of FCP7. What are peoples thoughts on this?

    Many Thanks,

November 2, 2016 at 11:34 am in reply to: SSD’s in RAID 0 or a Pro SSD?

    Hi Eli,

“Disk striping is the process of dividing a body of data into blocks and spreading the data blocks across multiple storage devices, such as hard disks or solid-state drives (SSDs). A stripe consists of the data divided across the set of hard disks or SSDs, and a striped unit, or strip, that refers to the data slice on an individual drive.” Ref: https://searchstorage.techtarget.com/definition/disk-striping

Basically it means dividing the data over a number of drives (i.e a RAID) So multiple HDD drives can be accessed at once for high speed data transfer).

I’ve been looking for a similar solution to yourself but for a different purpose. Check out my post:
    https://forums.creativecow.net/thread/381/944

I’d Just buy one of these if you can afford:
    SANDISK EXTREME 900 PORTABLE SSD
    https://www.sandisk.com/home/ssd/extreme-900-ssd
Gives you up 2TB storage which will be fast, secure and highly portable. Very high speed data transfer and doesn’t require external power.

A RAID enclosure may be a better option to with if you require a larger drive and you should be able to do it a little cheaper.

    Regards,

    Alex

October 21, 2016 at 3:42 pm in reply to: Fast Location Storage and Backup

    Thanks Bob,

Yea, maybe I dreamed something up! After doing a little more research; although the Sonnet Fusion looks great with speeds Data transfer rates up to 2100 MB/s!! The 512Gb isn’t quite enough for us. We need more like 2TB for when potentially out for a few days shooting 4K. After doing a little more research I stumbled across this:

SANDISK EXTREME 900 PORTABLE SSD USB 3.1- 1.92TB – £500 on amazon seems like a pretty reasonable price.
    https://www.sandisk.com/home/ssd/extreme-900-ssd
850 MB/s read/write speeds should be a vast improvement and save time at the end of the day on location.

Samsung also do similar but I think i’d rather trust a company that is less prone to their products catching fire…

Final question would be; Do you an trust SSD entirely to have all your rushes in one place at the end of a shoot?

    Thanks,

October 6, 2016 at 1:48 pm in reply to: DIY – NAS Storage Solution for FCPX

    Hi John,

    Thanks for your reply.

Bob has suggested some all-in-one box options that might be good for our company such as the:

    QNAP IBQ-871T-i716

I think since this is highly expandable via thunderbolt and that we only look to serve 4-5 editors at once we don’t really need anything more advanced and at a similar cost its hard to ignore. As you mentioned, the after-sales support could also be priceless.

I did like the idea of a gargantuan project though!

    Hi Bob,

Many thanks for your reply. I really appreciate all of the work you put in both here on CC, and around the web.

Ok so thats some great incite and at least from what you’ve replied looks like I’m heading in the right direction and haven’t missed too much….

    In conclusion to your answers:

    – NFS requires further reading – this seems a good place to start – https://www.fcp.co/final-cut-pro/tutorials/1421-how-to-share-final-cut-pro-x-libraries-on-a-network-using-nfs
    – Use 10Gbe CAT6
    – The Sonnet Twin 10G is the one to get (We are starting to edit more and more 4K).
    – Stay away from Akitio
    – Mini Mac is a NO
    – Hackintosh still a possibilty / Mac 5,1

    Further questions:

    1. Network

Can you recommend a good budget switch?

What PCI 10GBe Network card would you recommend for the Mac Pro 5,1/Hackintosh? This one-
    https://www.sonnettech.com/product/presto10gbeserver.html
I assume this is what’s in the sonnet Twin 10G, Correct?
Is there an advantage with the twin over the single?
    https://www.sonnettech.com/product/presto10gbe.html

    2. Server

Good idea on the old school Mac Pro 5,1. My only problem with this is that is it future proof? For example I know System definitions 3,1 and 4,1 are now not supported in Sierra.

    Dedicated NAS box?
This would be going to a company direct right? Looks expensive! e.g gblabs – https://www.gblabs.com/products/FastNAS_F_16/

Good point on the ‘Sonnet xMac mini server’ – This is just a glorified case with PCI expansion correct?

    3. RAID

The main thing I may have missed (still getting my head around) is the Host adaptor card, would this not be the High-point RocketRAID 2760A I mentioned?

The ‘Areca ARC-1882IX-24 PCI-Express 3.0’ looks great also, does this offer anything extra over the RocketRaid. Can you recommend any other cards that would be compatible/best?

Are there any other components I’ve missed? I mean I just need a chassis to hold all my drives right and run a load of SATA cables from the SAS breakouts on the raid card?

Thanks again Bob, Lots to learn and think about. You are correct I’m definitely going to be asking alot of questions/need help along the way. Don’t suppose you know anybody in Ireland who may be experienced in this realm?

    Kind Regards,

    Alex James
