In the end I couldn’t justify the cost of either of those, so I purchase the Intesity Extreme. So far, I have found it to be a very good, stable product. If I ever do 3D work, I would probably use the Ultrastudio 3D.

I also wanted to have the option of analog inputs as you also said, which the AJA doesn’t have. Also I wanted to use Divinci Resolve, which only works with BMD products.

Are you trying to provide and analog output from the BMD Ultra Studio 3D, or provide an analog input into the BMD?

If using it as an output, you need to set the audio in the system preferences to use the BMD device, instead of your computer speakers.

I think I may have resolved the delay issue, by setting the picture mode on the LG TV to “Game” mode, which I understand reduces the amount of pre-processing. I think it may be 1 frame out now, but at least it is an improvement.

I have noticed now however that on the TV, shots with a lot of horizontal movement are showing very jerky. Does the Intensity Extreme support interlacing properly with FCPX? All my projects are in 1080 50i and the settings on the BMD are the same, but still the picture does not show the quality I would expect. I have tried changing the FCPX setting from “High Quality” to “Better Performance” which seems to help slightly, but I would expect the “High Quality” setting to work just fine. I am using a G-raid Thunderbolt 8TB drive, which support around 300MB/S so the hard drive should be able to support playback.

Some of the shots I am referring to have stabilization applied in FCPX – does that feature support interlacing properly, as this could be the culprit?

As I understand you wont be able to use the BMD Ultrastudio Express AND a mini display port monitor at the same time, they are both end of chain devices.

If you had an Apple Thunderbolt display, you could use that as a second display, but they are expensive.

I am in the same boat, but found an interesting solution running FCPX off my MBP, and using an old iMac as a second monitor using software called AirParrot and Reflection. The iMac acts as a second monitor for FCPX (for viewing the events browser or viewer) but it works over WIFI, and not mini displayport. So I can use a video out device like the BMD ones (soon to purchase) and still have a second screen. It isn’t perfect, but is cheaper than splashing out on a Thunderbolt display!

Not sure about the answer to your final question (simultaneous outputs on HDMI & SDI at the same time). I would also like to know the answer as I am thinking of either waiting for the Ultrastudio Express, or buying an Intensity Extreme (to replace a Matrox MXO2 Mini I am selling).

Hi. Do you have to change the settings in system preferences ever time you use FCPX, or does it remember the settings each time you use it?

With my Matrox MXO2 Mini it seems to always default back to 29.97 fps even though I almost always use 25fps! I have to close FCPX, change the system preferences and re-load FCPX.

Thanks, but I am also interested to know not just if it can split the clips into Left and Right clips, but also if you have 100 clips on the camera and capture in Media Express via HDMI, does it record this as one long clip or is it clever enough to split it into 100 separate clips?

That’s interesting. I thought my Matrox MXO2 Mini was buggy so I am selling mine to get BMD or AJA! One problem I have is that the playback settings always default back to 29.97 fps every time I load FCPX when I want to use 50i fps. Does this happen with the BMD?

What are the main bugs you experience?

I am thinking the AJA is a bit pricey for me so will probably end up with BMD, but would be interested to hear more about specific bugs.

Hi,

I am almost convinced I should buy a Ninja for my NX5. The only thing I am worried about is that it splits large files into 4GB chunks. How do you fair at joining them together again?

I am currently using FCP7 which I know has the import folder command which works, but I am moving to FCPX, which will leave me only with the option of locating which clips should go together, create a compound clip, or re-export to a new Prores file (which sounds like a pain). Is there a smarter way around this?
